ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State volleyball snapped an eight-match losing streak and picked up its first conference victory with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21) win over San Francisco State Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena.
"We knew tonight was a great opportunity for us to get our first win, and I am very pleased that we were able to do it in four sets," said HSU Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "The girls played really hard tonight."
Trailing 3-1 in the first set,
Lauren Reid powered a 7-0 run for the Green and Gold that set the tone for the evening. Reid recorded three kills during the run and HSU used it to get momentum early. The Jacks took the first set 25-18 and compiled a .306 hitting percentage.
The second frame was fiercely contested and featured eight ties. HSU took advantage of SF State miscues midway through the set and got some separation with a 15-10 lead. The Gators clawed back, but Reid provided set point to give the Jacks a 25-23 win.
HSU jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in set three, but SF State wasn't ready to pack up the bus just yet. The Gators had their best offensive performance of the night hitting .256 and edging the Green and Gold 25-22.
The Jacks made a 6-0 run late in the third frame to almost end the match in three, and that rally gave the team a boost heading into set four.
Anita Eichenour tallied five of her nine kills in the deciding frame, and HSU held on despite hitting .174. Eichenour scored two of the team's final four points and Reid provided match point.
Reid led the Jacks with 20 kills and registered a .390 hitting percentage.
Sarah Shively had a team-best 23 digs, while
Jessica Lammers and
Rachel Tostberg finished with 23 and 20 digs, respectively.
HSU travels to face Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Sept. 29. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
