Men’s Soccer Falls to Chico State in Double Overtime

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State's men's soccer team showed plenty of determination on Friday afternoon against Chico State in a battle of CCAA undefeated programs, but ultimately fell in double overtime to the visitors, 1-0.

The loss was HSU's first since its opening game of the season against Concordia University, and ended a six-game winning streak and a 3-0 start to conference play. Chico State rises to 7-2, 5-0 in the CCAA.

"I thought the boys did a lot of things really well today," said HSU Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "We fought hard, we managed the game very well. Chico's a very strong team and put us under a lot of pressure at times, but defensively we were very organized, we played smart, and we didn't give a whole lot away."

Mumbi Kwesele led the Jacks with three shots, two on goal, as part of the home team's nine-shot day. Both Isaiah Dairo and Frankie Calderon had two shots with one on goal.

The visitors tallied 19 shots, and as a testament to the fact that the contest got quite chippy at times, accumulated 13 second-half fouls. Five yellow cards were also handed out between the two teams. HSU keeper Chris Cherms kept a clean net with three saves before the Wildcats managed to slip one by, delivered by Justin Bethke with assists from Eruvey Arceta and Ryan Caro.

"They definitely made it tough, and it was a battle," said Jungemann. "We created some good chances. We had opportunities to score, and the game really could have gone either way. The credit goes to Chico for getting the goal in overtime, but it was a great game."

The Jacks now turn their focus to Sunday's conference matchup with Stanislaus State. The match begins at 2 p.m. at College Creek Field.
