Men’s Soccer Travels to Bay Area for Golden Gate Classic

LIVE STATS/VIDEO

ARCATA, Calif. –
Fresh off a 3-0 victory over Saint Martin's on Saturday, the Humboldt State men's soccer team takes the pitch again this Friday in a road date with Academy of Art in San Francisco before facing Holy Names on Sunday. Friday's game begins at 1 p.m.

Asked how his team was handling the road-heavy early part of their schedule – the Lumberjacks just returned from the Cavalier Classic at Concordia University at Portland, Ore. –  junior Francisco Calderon, who scored two goals versus Saint Martin's, said "Portland was great for us, getting us to step outside our comfort zone a little bit." Calderon added that while his team would obviously love to play at home all the time, it was especially gratifying to go on the road and earn victories.

"There will always be difficulties early in the season when you're leaving classes and trying to get into the rhythm with homework, and missing classes will always make them a little stressed out," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "But on the flip side, being on the road early gives us a little more team time together, which we can hopefully put to good use on the field."

Academy of Art is coming off a 1-1 tie with Cal State East Bay, and will face a Humboldt State team that saw seven players have their first NCAA action in HSU's tourney opener last Thursday in Portland against Concordia. The Urban Knights compiled a 2-15-1 record a year ago and returns four senior returners from the 2016 squad.

Holy Names opened its season with a 4-0 loss to East Bay. Yohannes Harish led the way for the Hawks with four shots, and the senior was the team's top contributor with two goals and two assists last year. The Jacks have not faced Holy Names since 2015 when they won 1-0.
