LACEY, Wash. – Humboldt State volleyball lost two matches Friday at the DII West Region Showcase in Marcus Pavilion. Notre Dame de Namur won the early match 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25) and Point Loma swept the North Coast team 3-0 (24-26, 16-25, 16-25).
Friday's results moved HSU's record to 1-4.
The Lumberjacks opened the afternoon versus Notre Dame de Namur. The Argos took a highly-competitive first set that saw the Jacks pull within one point, 23-22, before yielding the last two points.
HSU scored the second set's final three points on attack errors en route to a 25-23 decision.
Janelle Ayala led the way with four of her 10 kills in the frame.
Despite falling behind 3-0, the Jacks bounced back to force eight ties in the back-and-forth third set. The Argos scored five of the last seven points to take a 2-1 lead.
Notre Dame de Namur took a 22-11 lead late in the deciding frame before HSU stormed back with an 8-0 run. Rowan Jack supplied set and match point for the Argos and finished the set with a team-high five kills.
"Our team passed great today, we spread the ball on offense, but we didn't make the adjustments that were necessary to beat Notre Dame," said Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "They had two very talented left sides, and we were unable to stop them."
HSU found no relief in the nightcap as it fell in straight sets to Point Loma.
The Jacks hung with the Sea Lions in set one as both teams struggled offensively hitting below .200. HSU tied the set at 24-24 before Point Loma scored the final two points for the win.
Point Loma never trailed in the final two sets on its way to a sweep. The Sea Lions won the second and third frames by a score of 25-16.
"Point Loma is a talented team, that plays tough at the net," said Wood. "We have to get used to playing bigger teams. We are small and we have to beat teams by playing with a high volleyball IQ. We will continue to learn from these losses. We have one more match up in Washington and we hope to end in a high note versus Montana."
Sarah Shively was HSU's top performer with 20 digs, and
Alex Lolland recorded a team-high .356 hitting percentage to go with six kills.
HSU concludes its Washington trip with a match against Montana State-Billings Saturday at 5 p.m.
