Men’s Basketball Drops Road Contest at Chico State

CHICO, Calif. – Humboldt State men's basketball had a tough time finding offensive success Saturday night, falling to Chico State at Art Acker Gymnasium 74-36.

HSU slipped to 6-13 overall and 3-10 in conference play, while Chico improved to 12-5, 9-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.

"Chico State presents a difficult matchup problem for us," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "Their post play is very good and we weren't able to match that tonight from the opening tipoff. Their outside game and shooting developed from their toughness inside. We obviously didn't compete well, and we weren't able to go punch for punch."

Chico came out of the gates well, scoring the first nine points of the game and steadily increasing its lead throughout the first half, taking a 34-18 advantage at the break.

The Wildcats opened the second half on a 10-0 run and continued to pull away for the remainder of the game. The home team limited HSU to a season-low 36 points and 18.3 percent shooting, the team's worst output this season.

HSU equalled Chico's offensive rebounding total, hitting the glass for 13 boards. They also limited themselves to 10 turnovers in the contest, to Chico's nine. Jack Kaub and Kameron Curl led HSU with six points apiece, while Will Taylor finished with five points and a team-best six rebounds.

Jalen McFerren led the Wildcats with 19 points and became the 19th player in program history with 1,000 career points.

"We are back to the drawing board as far as being disciplined," said Kinder. "What we take away from this is the opportunity to be disciplined traveling back, and we will prepare for our next opponent and pack our bags for the next roadtrip. This is a character check and presents an opportunity to see what we are made of."

HSU will now focus on next weekend's contests, as it travels to Cal State LA for a Friday date and visits Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, both games will have a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
