Energized Women’s Basketball Squad Makes SoCal Trip

| By:
ARCATA, Calif. – After an exciting 69-60 road win over Chico State, the Humboldt State women's basketball squad hits the road again to face Cal State Los Angeles and Dominguez Hills.

HSU takes on the Golden Eagles Friday and travels to Carson for a meeting with the Toros Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday's win over the Wildcats cements the Jacks spot in the top third of the conference standings and gives the team confidence heading into another long road swing. HSU defeated both LA and Dominguez Hills before the New Year.

"It was a big win for a lot of reasons," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "Yes, the rivalry and the CCAA standings. With a single game last week we had time to prepare and our girls came ready to play. As a coach I felt very confident and comfortable to go into the game, and we executed extremely well."

The Chico State victory puts HSU in a strong position with nine games remaining on the schedule. A top four finish in the conference standings will clinch a postseason home game in late February.

LA and Dominguez Hills sit in the middle of the conference standings with 7-7 records, and both squads suffered a loss their last time out. The Golden Eagles suffered a lopsided result versus Cal Poly Pomona last weekend and scored a season-low 38 points. LA has been strong on its home court compiling a 6-4 mark in University Gym.

"We are certainly very familiar with Cal State LA from a personnel standpoint," said Bento-Jackson. "We feel like these last couple days in practice we got a good grasp of what they are going to run offensively. Like always it is about preparation. I am sure coach Cheryl Miller will make some changes on her end and we are going to make changes on our end. That is where the chess match comes into play."

The Toros boast one of the CCAA's top offenses averaging 69.9 points per game, and Nautica Morrow leads their scorers averaging 18.4 points per game. Morrow scored 21 in the last meeting with the Jacks, but was limited to just 13 points on 26.7 percent shooting in last week's loss to San Bernardino.
