Women’s Basketball Bounces Back in Second Game of SoCal Swing

CARSON, Calif. – After seeing a 15-point lead evaporate in the closing minutes of its game at Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night, Humboldt State women's basketball eked out a 62-58 victory to salvage its SoCal road trip.

The win brought HSU's record to 11-9, 10-5 CCAA, and was especially encouraging given that they were on the back end of games on consecutive nights. Dominguez Hills dropped to 10-11, 8-8 CCAA.

"This was a grind out win for us tonight," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "Dominguez certainly took the momentum in the fourth quarter, and I thought we did a great job of keeping our composure. We made some big shots down the stretch and Tyra [Turner] made it a two-possession game by hitting a free throw. I'm proud of how we responded tonight."

HSU took what would be its largest lead at 51-36 with 9:04 left in the game on a Kindall Murie three-pointer, but watched Dominguez Hills rally and take a 56-51 lead with 2:49 remaining. The Jacks overcame the Toros' 20-0 run and recovered to avoid the road sweep following Friday's loss to Cal State LA. HSU ended the game on an 11-0 run keyed by a tie-breaking Jovanah Arrington three-pointer to make it 61-58 at the 32-second mark.

Arrington led three Jacks in double figures with 15 points, and Riann Thayer also contributed 14 on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Murie had 12 points and connected on 5-of-8 attempts.

HSU overcame a 50-30 rebounding deficit on the strength of 8-of-17 shooting from downtown (47.1 percent). Arrington led the Jacks with 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range. The visitors also forced 25 Dominguez Hills turnovers and scored 26 points off the miscues.

After trailing 13-11 at the conclusion of the first quarter, the Jacks built their lead in part with a big second period, outscoring the hosts 21-10. In the third, HSU bested Dominguez Hills 14-11 to take a 47-34 lead into the wild fourth quarter.

The Jacks are next in action at home against Cal State East Bay on Thursday, Feb. 1 with a 5:30 p.m. tip time.
