Hagger, Pomrehn Lead HSU Past Cougars

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Davasyia Hagger scored a team-high 23 points as Humboldt State men's basketball captured an 81-78 win over Cal State San Marcos.

"We are really proud of how we bounced back after 24 hours, both physically and emotionally," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "We gave the team quite a few new strategies to keep Cal State San Marcos off balance, and the team executed those principles. It took a great team effort to beat a tough team like San Marcos on the road."

Hagger scored all but one of the Lumberjacks' first 13 points and helped the Green and Gold hang with the Cougars in the first half. Despite committing eight first half turnovers that San Marcos converted into 15 points, HSU trailed by just four, 38-34, at the half. Hagger finished the first 20 minutes with 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting and went 4-of-4 at the free-throw line.

"Davasyia was able to come back after 24 hours and turn in one of his better games," said Kinder. "We passed up good shots for great shots tonight, and when you get him going early it certainly sets the tone for our offense."

The first half was difficult for HSU sharpshooter Ashton Pomrehn, but he was lights out from beyond the arc following intermission. The Arcata native sank five 3-pointers and scored 18 second half points to spark the Green and Gold rally. HSU erased its deficit and moved in front, leading by as many as 12 points with less than 7 minutes left in regulation.

"We are excited Ashton is getting out of his hitter's slump," said Kinder. "Credit his team for believing in him during that slump. Once he got his first 3-pointer to fall tonight the floodgates opened. We needed him to pull off this victory."

HSU shot 62.5 percent from the field in the second half and 75 percent from long range.

Four Jacks scored 10 or more points in the win; Kameron Curl scored 13 points and Jack Kaub added 11. Kaub recorded his first double-double of the season adding 11 rebounds to his stat line.

HSU improved to 6-10 overall and 3-7 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play with Saturday's win. The Jacks host Cal Poly Pomona in Lumberjack Arena Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

"We have a lot of momentum and confidence going right now," said Kinder. "We are a group of nine players that have come together and are playing great basketball. Our team can get a lot better, we have a high ceiling and it's exciting to see the team continue to improve. Pomona is a very talented, well-coached basketball team, and we can't wait to play them in front of our home crowd."
