Men’s Soccer Captures First October Victory

ARCATA, Calif. -- The Humboldt State men's soccer team pulled off a 4-2 win over Sonoma State Saturday afternoon at College Creek Field.

"This was a great result for our guys," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "We've had a difficult season to this point, and to see them have some success today really makes us proud for the effort they continue to put in every week."

HSU applied pressure early and kept it up throughout the half. Isaiah Dairo connected on a through ball from Martin Calerdon for an early shot on goal that was saved. Calderon also chipped in on defense next to Dalton Rice keeping Sonoma's shots down to just six in the first half. Rice recorded two defensive saves in the game to help goalkeeper Robert Quintero. Quintero stood out with a jumping save in the first half after the Seawolves landed a header off a corner kick that was on its way for left corner of the net.

A scramble towards the goal gave Danny Allred an opportunity for a hard shot that met the crossbar and came back in perfect position for Gus Baxter to put a header in goal for the Jacks to go up 1-0 at 21:28. The Seawolves matched the home team eight minutes later with a through ball pass to center, Quintero charged but the ball was put past him to make it 1-1. HSU broke the tie with a shot from Marco Silveira who took a rebound off of a Sonoma defender to make the score 2-1.

The Green and Gold (5-8-2) weren't done as they capitalized on another corner kick opportunity. Devin Hauenstein found Rice with the corner, and he sunk a header into the net at 41:28. The Jacks went into the half leading 3-1 with 14 shot attempts.

The second half showed consistent effort from the Jacks. Game starters Hauenstein and Baxter sat coming into the second half but returned 27 minutes in to encourage some big plays. Less than 10 minutes later, Haeunstein waited to the right of the net for a pass from Silveira that the freshman sent into the far side to make the score 4-1 at 70:10.

Rice recorded his second defensive save off a breakaway from Sonoma's Sebastian Santos, the conference's leading goal scorer. The defense added another save for the team off a shot at 87:40 that was rebounded and put in past Quintero on a one-touch shot from Santos. The Jacks put the game away 4-2 and celebrated their first win in five games.

"We had good performances everywhere on the field and on both sides of the ball," said Coach Jungemann. "I am happy for the result, but even more so for the way we played today. It was an all-around team effort today.

HSU meets back at College Creek Field to take on Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday at 3 p.m.
