All Tricks, No Treats as Wildcats Defeat Football 62-24

ARCATA, Calif. – After suffering a 49-0 defeat to Central Washington in the second game of the season, the Humboldt State football team was looking for a different result in the North Coast meeting but sadly got more of the same. The Lumberjacks lost to the Wildcats 62-24 Saturday night in Redwood Bowl.

"We were outmatched," said HSU Head Coach Damaro Wheeler. "They are a good program. Our kids kept fighting, as usual."

Central Washington clinched at least a share of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title with the victory and improved to 7-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play. The Green and Gold dropped their third straight and sank to 1-7 and 1-5 versus GNAC foes.

The game slipped away from the home team quickly as back-to-back possessions resulted in turnovers that Central Washington converted into touchdowns. The Wildcats led 20-0 after a quarter of play and scored the first 34 points of the game.

After coming up empty in their first six drives, the HSU offense found pay dirt with a home run play from running back Tyree Marzetta. The senior electrified the home crowd with a 64-yard touchdown trot to put the Green and Gold on the board with 5:15 left in the half. Marzetta continued his string of impressive performances with 168 yards on 13 carries in Saturday's loss.

The Wildcats' showed off their quick-strike offense with a pair of scoring drives that combined for less than three minutes to take a 48-7 lead. HSU engineered a speedy drive of its own as Joey Sweeney hit Gary O'Leary for a four-yard touchdown strike as the half came to a close.

Central Washington kept most of its starters in the game for the third quarter but was limited to just seven points by the HSU defense. The Jacks trailed 55-14 after three quarters.

Jose Morales connected on a 47-yard field goal and Andrew Tingstad, who relieved Sweeney late in the ball game, tossed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Shane Torre to make the final score 62-24.

The visitors were successful in each phase of the game as the Wildcat offense racked up 594 yards, while their defense forced three turnovers. Central Washington was a perfect 7-for-7 in red-zone scoring opportunities.

HSU hosts Azusa Pacific next Saturday in Redwood Bowl. The game will be the Jacks' home finale and the senior class will be recognized during pregame ceremonies.
