Jacks Close Season with Senior Day Victory Over East Bay

ARCATA, Calif.  – The Humboldt State men's soccer team closed out its 2018 season topping Cal State East Bay in a 3-1 match at College Creek Field on Saturday afternoon.

The bleachers were overflowing with friends and family as the Jacks settled into a physical Senior Day contest with East Bay. The Pioneers took advantage of their height in the back line as Marco Silveira went on a breakaway down the right side and was taken out by the center back inside the box, prompting a penalty kick. Senior captain Danny Allred stepped in to take the kick as his team filled the line. Less than four minutes after HSU's halftime locker room talk, Allred executed a perfect shot into the top right corner of the net.

At 1-0, the Green and Gold kept the forward momentum and charged another on East Bay in the 80th minute. Devin Hauenstein got the ball at midfield and sunk a shot from deep.

Trailing 2-0 with less than nine minutes to play, the Pioneers answered the Jacks with a penalty kick opportunity of their own. HSU senior keeper Bryan Hernandez faced Carter Magee in the box, but a fake out ultimately brought the score to 2-1 on a goal low on the left side.

HSU matched East Bay in physicality and both teams tussled back and forth, often including senior Max Steinmetz. Steinmetz responded to their taunts with a breakaway goal down the middle. The Hermosa Beach, Calif., native dribbled the ball from midfield, beat the East Bay back line and took the ball near the goal line before launching a line drive in the far side net at 88:16.

Emotions were high as five seniors took the field in their last collegiate soccer match at HSU. Allred, Hernandez, and Steinmetz along with Frankie Calderon and Chris Cherms said goodbye to the turf they've called home as the 2018 senior graduating class. Humboldt ended their season on a three-game win streak, finishing 7-8-2 overall and 3-7-2 in CCAA.
