Volleyball Opens Homestand With 3-0 Loss to East Bay

ARCATA, Calif. — The Humboldt State women's volleyball team was unable to snap its losing streak as it lost in straight sets to Cal State East Bay Thursday night in Lumberjack Arena.

"I felt happy with the fight we showed tonight," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "In the second set we were right there with them, but we obviously lost a tight one. We had a couple solid performances from our middles Hannah and Savannah, and Natalie Picone had a good all-around game. Overall, I'm happy with the progress the team is making. We showed tonight what we are capable of playing like and I'm proud of the fight our girls put up."

The Lumberjacks rallied to a 3-1 one advantage following a Lauren Reid kill to begin the first set but the lead didn't last. East Bay was able to capture five of the last six points on their way to a 29-25 win.

HSU battled back in the second frame through a back-and-forth set that saw 17 ties and nine lead changes. The home team had its chance to grab the win 26-24 following three attack errors by the Pioneers Kiki Leuteneker, but the visitors persevered and took the set 29-27.

East Bay jumped out to a 13-2 lead to start the third as the North Coast squad failed to recover. The Jacks compiled a .268 hitting percentage and trimmed the deficit to 16-9 following one of Hannah Cantrell's team-high nine kills. The Pioneers eventually took the final set by a score of 25-17

Lauren Reid matched Cantrell's kill numbers to lead the Green and Gold, and Juliana Bertolucci added a match-high 33 assists to go along with 15 digs.

The result moves HSU to 3-22 overall and 0-17 in CCAA play with one match remaining. The Lumberjacks will look to end their season on a high note Saturday as they face San Francisco State at 7 p.m. for their Senior Day matchup inside Lumberjack Arena.
