Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Andrew Goetz

Men’s Basketball Falls to Rainbow Warriors 90-54

HONOLULU – Humboldt State men's basketball faced its second NCAA Division I opponent in as many days and faced the same result as the Lumberjacks lost to Hawaii 90-54 Saturday night in the Stan Sheriff Center.

The game was close for the first five minutes as the Rainbow Warriors warmed up and got a first-hand look at the visitors' offensive and defensive looks. A pair of Mate Colina free throws at the 10-minute mark started a 20-0 run for the home team that ended with the Green and Gold trailing 33-11. Hawaii outscored HSU 14-10 the rest of the way, and the Rainbow Warriors took a 47-21 lead into the locker room. The Jacks shot 28 percent from the field and 11 percent from 3-point range in the first half.

Jackson Strong, HSU's top scorer in the first half with seven points, sank a pair of 3-pointers to begin the last 20 minutes of action and gave his team something to cheer about. Hawaii kept its 20-plus point advantage for the remainder of the game, and the Rainbow Warriors were aided by HSU foul trouble that put the home team in the double bonus with more than 10 minutes to play.

Strong was the Jacks' leading scorer with 13 points and was 5-of-13 shooting with three 3-point baskets. Justin Everett finished with a team-leading six rebounds, and Calvin Young II recorded a pair of blocks.

HSU returns to the North Coast and opens the regular season with a home game against Pacific Union Tuesday at 7 p.m.
