FRESNO, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's basketball team battled hard but came up short Friday night as it fell to Fresno State by a score of 78-50.
"Tonights game was an outstanding experience for our players and staff," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "Representing our university at this level is an opportunity we take seriously, competing on the court and carrying ourselves with class in a professional manner. We are appreciative of our sister institution, Fresno State, for scheduling this game and inviting us to play on their stage."
The Bulldogs looked hungry from the opening tip as they jumped out to a 35-12 advantage, and they held onto the lead entering the locker room up 44-25 at the break. The Lumberjacks tried to keep themselves in the game, but 10 first-half turnovers proved too much for the North Coast squad to overcome.
Fresno State held HSU to 32.3 percent shooting as it kept adding to its lead for the remainder of the game. The Green and Gold held their own against the Division I opponent on the glass as they corralled 38 boards compared to Fresno State's 40. The Bulldogs maintained their advantage by getting to the free-throw line more frequently adding 22 from the charity strike and limiting HSU to just three points on five attempts.
Justin Everett led HSU with 10 points and seven rebounds as Victor Mijas, Jackson Strong, and Zachary Christian each contributing nine points of their own. Christian also got after it on the defensive side of the ball finishing with two blocks and a steal.
New Williams led all scorers with 15 points for the home squad, and he also added three rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal.
The Jacks will now focus their attention to next week as they compete in the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu. HSU faces North Texas Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. before playing the host University of Hawaii the following day at 10:30 p.m. Both tip-off times are Pacific.
