Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Andrew Goetz

Road Trip Takes Toll on Jacks, Fall to Coyotes 83-73

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Seven consecutive road games finally took their toll on the Humboldt State men's basketball team as it lost to Cal State San Bernardino, 83-73, Saturday.

The Lumberjacks held a slight lead, 38-35, at the half but shot 26.7 percent from the field after the break on their way to the 10-point decision. HSU moves to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

"Our goal was to sweep and not split on the road this weekend," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "We will go back to the drawing board and figure out a way, as a coaching staff, to be able to sustain significant leads and limit our scoring droughts. We begin each game extremely strong and set the tone early, our starting line up has shown up ready to play."

HSU's starting five were responsible for all but 12 of the team's 38 first-half points. Back-to-back-to-back buckets from outside the arc got the Green and Gold started and it looked like the offensive firepower from Thursday night made a repeat appearance. A Trevon Bentley layup with 10:12 remaining in the first half gave the Jacks their largest lead of the afternoon, 20-7, but the Coyotes were ready with a response. San Bernardino went on a 14-6 run to close within striking distance of the visitors as the first half ended. Kameron Curl and Jackson Strong led the North Coast team with eight and seven points, respectively, in the first 20 minutes.

Unlike the first half, the HSU shooters were ice cold after taking the court following intermission. The Jacks were held to just two points, a pair of Curl free throws, in the first 4:43 seconds of the second half, while the home team scored 14 and took a 49-40 advantage. HSU chased the Coyotes for the remainder of the game, but never got closer than seven points.

Strong finished the game with a season-best 21 points, and the junior connected on six shots from long range – also a season-high. Curl followed with 17 points and went a perfect 9-for-9 at the charity stripe, while Justin Everett added 10 points to go with nine rebounds. LJ Williams also continued to make the most of his opportunities in the starting lineup with seven points and a team-best 10 boards in only his second start of the year.

"After being on the road the past five weekends in a row, 10 away games, and over 10,000 miles of travel, we are looking forward to playing the next five games at home before now and the holiday break," said Kinder.

HSU returns to the North Coast to face Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
