Women’s Basketball Falls Behind Early, Stumbles at No. 10 UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. – A 22-point, 10-rebound performance from junior guard Tyra Turner wasn't enough to save the Humboldt State women's basketball team from a slow start as it fell to No. 10 UC San Diego 72-58 Saturday in RIMAC Arena.

"Tonight is very disappointing, as I felt we took a step backward in a few areas," said HSU Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "Unfortunately, some of our deficiencies tonight were things that we have talked about before. We must show consistency to progress as a team."

The Lumberjacks sank the first basket, a free throw from Alexia Thrower, but trailed 19-3 after the first seven minutes of play. HSU outscored the home team 18-11 in the second period and chased the Tritons for the remainder of the game.

HSU connected on just 13.3 percent of its shots in the first 10 minutes, and San Diego took advantage of the North Coast team's start. Julia Macabuhay poured in 12 of her team's 24 points to give the Tritons an insurmountable advantage.

The lead grew to a game-high 22 points midway through the second quarter despite improved play from the Green and Gold. Turner finished the first half with 10 points, five boards and three assists. The Tritons led 35-25 at intermission.

San Diego didn't duplicate its first-quarter dominance in the second half, and it didn't matter. The Tritons held a 37-33 scoring advantage in the final 20 minutes and closed out the game shooting 54.2 percent from the field. The home team led the game for 38:29 and improved to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

Turner's double-double was her first of the season, and she distributed the basketball to near perfection. She dished out six assists with just one turnover. Gabrielle Carbajal scored a season-best 13 points and was 5-of-8 shooting with three treys. Thrower finished with nine points and seven boards.

"We will regroup, learn, and work hard to prepare for Pomona on Monday," added Bento-Jackson.

HSU travels to face Cal Poly Pomona on Monday at 2 p.m.
