Strong Lifts Men’s Basketball to Upset Over No. 8 Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. – Junior guard Jackson Strong flexed his 3-point shooting muscle and scored a season-best 25 points as he led the Humboldt State men's basketball team to a 70-65 win over Cal Poly Pomona. Monday's win was the Lumberjacks' first road victory against the Broncos since Feb. 11, 2011.

"Going into UCSD we thought we would beat them, but we came out flat," said Strong. "We came out in this game with a great game plan and a fresh mindset. We executed our plan, and I think we can compete with anybody. I've been told that I would get a lot of shots, but I felt like they lost me and my teammates found me."

The SoCal native felt right at home Monday night as he sank a season-high seven 3-pointers and stunned the No. 8-ranked Broncos. Strong finished the night 8-of-16 shooting and went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line.

HSU had a strong start and hung with the talented home team in a first half that featured nine lead changes and four ties. Strong knocked down a trio of 3-pointers, he had five in the first 20 minutes, to power a 15-7 run midway through the half that gave the Lumberjacks a 33-26 lead with 2:40 to go. Pomona's Justin Young sent the Broncos into the locker room with a slam that evened the game at 35-all.

The Green and Gold scored the first seven points following intermission, and LJ Williams got things started with a 3-point bucket of his own. Pomona pulled within one possession, 45-44, with a Nikhil Peters' trey just under the 16-minute media timeout, but the North Coast team responded with an 11-3 run to make it 56-47 with 10:32 left in regulation. HSU led for the remainder of the game, even though Phoenix Shackleford got the Broncos back within one in the final 30 seconds. Strong and freshman sensation Amari Green closed out the game with four made free throws.

"This team continues to grow with each game and accomplish things we have not seen for a long time in the program," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "Our senior leadership and new players on this roster have learned that defense wins big games. We used a few different combinations on our roster tonight to counter some of Pomona's talent. We stepped up, faced the challenge and played a full 40 minutes tonight."

Kameron Curl, Justin Everett and Green each dished out four assists and the Jacks finished with 18 compared to only 14 turnovers. Everett almost notched his second double-double of the season with 17 points and nine boards, and Williams scored 10 points.

HSU hosts Portland Bible College Sunday in Lumberjack Arena. Tipoff at 1 p.m.
