Men’s Basketball Rallies Big For Third Straight Win

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's basketball team overcame a 20-point halftime deficit to defeat Stanislaus State 81-78 Saturday night in Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

The Lumberjacks, inspired by a halftime speech from Romario Wilson, scored 59 points in the second half to rally for a pivotal road win. The win was HSU's third straight after it swept two home games last weekend, and ran its record to 9-15 overall, 6-12 CCAA. Stanislaus State fell to 15-9, 10-8 conference.

"I am so proud of these guys being able to overcome such a deficit and an emotionally draining first half," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "To come back showed a lot of character and a lot of toughness."

The game saw HSU fall behind 9-0 early before a pair of Jack Kaub free throws broke the ice. But the Warriors kept coming, forging a 16-4 lead at the 14:12 mark. The Jacks cut the deficit to five at 22-17 with 7:40 remaining, but saw Stanislaus State go on a 14-3 run to close the half and go up 42-22.

HSU's deficit was deflating, but Wilson provided the spark the team needed at intermission.

"I can't take any credit for the halftime speech, it goes to Romario Wilson," said Kinder. "He did a great job motivating us and inspiring us to believe we could win. It was solely him. He did a tremendous job having a backbone when everyone else in the room was flat. Coach Mendoza had nice motivational words at each media timeout saying 'we're chipping away, we're chipping away' That is the only way we could tackle the elephant that was in front of us."

Humboldt tried to chip away at the Warrior advantage in the second half, but the home team maintained a 20-point lead until the 15:27 mark. HSU reeled off a 9-0 run capped by an Everett jumper in starting to gain some positive momentum, making the score 53-42.

The Jacks eventually cut it to single digits at 10:37, 59-50. The Warriors recovered their double-digit advantage, but HSU steadily climbed back into it on the strength of 22 second half free-throw attempts. A layup by Hagger at the 3:20 mark made it a two-point game, and the visitors took their first lead of the game, 77-76, with 1:29 left on a Young II dunk.

Two clutch free-throws by both Curl and Hagger inside the final nine seconds iced the victory.

Kameron Curl led five visitors in double figures, hitting all nine of his free throw attempts en route to scoring 20 points, 17 in the second half. Calvin Young II had 15 with several thunderous dunks and pulled down six rebounds, while both Davasyia Hagger and Wilson notched 12. Hagger also contributed seven boards. Justin Everett scored 10 in the win.

HSU had 34 points in the paint and 37 bench points in the contest.

HSU is now off until their Thursday date with Cal State San Marcos at 7:30 p.m. on Play4Kay night to raise awareness for breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink.

"I have been told any time you get a streak of three is a trend, and we are happy to be trending right now," said Kinder. "Certainly picking up a win on the road means a lot to our players and our program."
