Tyla Turner’s Big Night Lifts HSU Past San Marcos

ARCATA, Calif. – Buoyed by a 32-point night by Tyla Turner, the Humboldt State women's basketball team celebrated on Play4Kay night. The Lumberjacks earned an 84-75 victory over visiting Cal State San Marcos Thursday.

"I'm proud of the team's effort tonight," said Lumberjack Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "I thought we did a lot of positive things. We had a tough week of preparation and for the most part, I thought we executed pretty well on both ends of the floor."

With a lead that ballooned to as many as 19 points, the Jacks kicked off their final homestand of the year by besting the Cougars. The home team shot 41 percent from 3-point range and 81 percent from the line and outrebounded San Marcos 38-28. Tyla Turner's big night negated the efforts of Cougar Savannah Camp, who managed 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field.

Tyla Turner hit 3-of-5 from downtown and went 7-of-8 from the line in her career-best performance. Jovanah Arrington scored 14 for the Jacks and Mikaela Shannon had 13 on a near-perfect night, shooting 5-of-6 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line. Isamar Conde and Tyla Turner led HSU with eight rebounds apiece.

The Jack defense forced 19 turnovers and generated 21 points off those San Marcos miscues.

The home team held a 21-15 lead after one quarter, and watched the Cougars close to within 23-21 in the second period. HSU extended its advantage to 44-31 at halftime on a pair of Tyla Turner free throws.

The Jacks had their biggest lead of the night at 55-36 in the third on a Conde free throw at the 4:26 mark, and took a 65-52 lead into the fourth quarter. San Marcos managed to get within 76-72 with just 2:33 left, but the Jacks hit free throws late as the Cougars were forced to foul to extend the game.

The victory moves HSU to 14-10 overall and 13-6 in conference play. The home squad welcomes conference leader UC San Diego into Lumberjack Arena on Senior Night Saturday evening with a 5:30 p.m. tip time.

"We will enjoy this win and wake up tomorrow morning preparing for San Diego," said Bento-Jackson. "We will have to put a complete 40 minutes together to put ourselves in a position to win the game."
