Men’s Basketball Hits the Road for Pair to Close Season

| By:
ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's basketball team concludes its season this Friday and Saturday with a trip to take on Sonoma State and San Francisco State, respectively.

The Lumberjacks are not in the mix for the CCAA postseason tournament this year, and will be playing purely for pride.

"I think it's very important that we represent well the next two games," said Lumberjack Head Coach Steve Kinder. "I think it's really important that our guys play hard like they have, play together, and play for those seniors. We have four seniors that we're very proud of, and we had a great celebration last Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena."

The Jacks enter the weekend's contests with a mark of 9-17 overall, 6-14 conference. Davasyia Hagger has led the squad's scoring attack with 11.5 points per game while Tyras Rattler Jr. has contributed 11.3 and Kameron Curl 10.7. Hagger has also notched an impressive seven rebounds per contest while Jack Kaub has 5.5.

The team as a whole is averaging 72.6 points per game and giving up 74.9. They are outrebounding their opponents at a clip of 38.3 to 36.4.

The Jacks will be facing a Seawolves team that comes in at 9-15, 7-13 CCAA, and a Gator squad that is 16-10, 12-8 conference.

"Sonoma State is a well-coached basketball team, and we have our own rivalry over the years," said Kinder. "Pat Fuscaldo, the coach there, and I are very close friends, but when that ball goes up, it's compete time. I always look forward to our contests with Sonoma State for that reason alone, with Coach Fuscaldo and his staff, and we've had some great battles in the past. He makes great adjustments during the game and we will try to counter those adjustments."

Kinder said he was especially proud of the way the Jacks have been playing for the last month and a half, including a stretch where they had three consecutive victories, and he looks forward to completing the season on a positive note.

"This season has been enjoyable," said Kinder. "These guys we've been coaching and developing relationships with and showing these young men the rights and wrongs in terms of discipline and work ethic and dedication. Being able to endure a basketball season that really starts in August with the first meetings and training through September and October, they've really come a long way, and I'm proud of what they've done and excited for the future."
