Softball Splits Friday Twinbill with Warriors

MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. – Humboldt State softball split with visiting Stanislaus State on a windy Friday afternoon at the McKinleyville High School softball field. The Lumberjacks edged the visitors in game one, 2-1, but lost 4-1 to the Warriors in game two.

Saturday's doubleheader has been canceled due to inclement weather.

Besides a solo home run in the fifth, Lexee Sheiring tossed a gem in the series opener. The freshman went the distance and allowed just one run on eight hits. She improved her season record to 3-2 with the victory.

HSU plated its only runs in the second and fifth frames. Illa Haley got things started with a one-out single in the second inning, moved to second on a Sheiring base knock and stole third. The junior came home on a fielder's choice as the Warriors erased Sheiring at second.

The home team stranded five base runners heading into the fifth inning and the score was knotted at 1-1. Hanna Holland reached base on a fielding miscue by the Stanislaus shortstop and eventually scored the go-ahead run on a Winona Vigil RBI single.

Haley was responsible for two of HSU's six hits in the win.

Two rocky innings for Jacks' starter Jasmine Hill in game two proved to be too much to overcome. The Warriors scored four runs in the first two frames and HSU's hitting was unable to match their output. Hill rebounded from the difficult start, and a laser up the middle that tagged her right hand, to baffle the visitors in the final five frames. She finished the game with a loss, but the senior surrendered just two hits after the second inning.

Holland supplied HSU's lone run as she drove a hit up the middle in the third, which scored Kelly Sonnemann from third base.

The Jacks moved to 7-8 overall and 5-5 in conference following Friday's twinbill.
