Men’s Basketball Falls to Gators in Season Finale

SAN FRANCISCO – After a tightly contested first half, Humboldt State men's basketball went cold offensively en route to a 72-60 road loss at San Francisco State in Saturday night's season finale.

The Lumberjacks finish the season with a 9-19 overall record and a 6-16 mark in conference play. San Francisco improved to 18-10 and 14-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The home team canned 11-of-21 from 3-point range and hit 50 percent of its field goals. HSU connected on nine treys in the game, but it was not enough to match the hot shooting of the hosts. SF State outrebounded the Jacks 33-23, and the Gators had 32 points in the paint.

HSU started off well and took their largest lead of the night at 16-10 with 14:00 to go in the first half on a Kameron Curl layup. The Gators scored the next eight points and the rest of the half saw both squads closely matched, neither establishing a lead of more than three points as they went into halftime deadlocked at 34.

"We came out and played together very well," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "We played smart and did a good job defensively in our zone. Our communication was at a high level, we executed defensively and we were able to get some fast break points tonight. I thought we were doing a very good job on both ends at the half."

HSU hung around for the first few minutes of the second half, with the score tied at 39 at the 17:51 mark, but the home team had a 15-2 run capped by a Ryne Williams layup to go up 54-41 with 11:16 remaining. The Gators maintained a double-digit lead for much of the second half, but the Jacks made it interesting when Jalen Terry's jumper cut it to 60-53 with 6:50 left.

SF State had the answers on this night, however, and had its biggest lead of the game at 70-54 with 1:06 to go.on a Niquis Garland jumper.

"Our bench never got it clicking tonight, but I think that also stems from the defensive end," said Kinder. "Some defensive stops would have translated to positives on the offensive end. Credit SF State, they shot the ball well and they are playing really well. They had a huge game last night versus Chico State and held the Wildcats to 11 points in the first half. We were on high alert going into this game and knew we would need to manufacture some offense against a very good defensive team."

Curl had an efficient night, as he hit 8-of-14 field goal attempts and sank four shots beyond the arc as he led the Jacks with 21 points. Justin Everett was the only other visitor in double-figures with 10 on 5-of-10 shooting, but Davasyia Hagger grabbed eight rebounds on the night.

"I thought the team played really well for the seniors," said Kinder. "The team played with a lot of pride tonight, and it was good to see our seniors go out with a competitive ball game."
