Women’s Basketball Defeats Gators, Clinches CCAA Tournament Home Game

SAN FRANCISCO – Five Lumberjacks scored in double figures as the Humboldt State women's basketball team concluded its regular season with a 76-52 road win over San Francisco State Saturday night.

"Tonight was a good win for our team for a number of reasons," said Lumberjack Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "Most importantly, I am pleased with our effort and how we executed on both ends of the floor. We kept our intensity on the defensive end and we did a great job of sharing the ball and working for the best shot."

HSU finishes the regular season with a 15-12 record overall and a 14-8 mark against California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents.

Mikaela Shannon was part of the HSU bench brigade that scored 44 points and she led a balanced attack with 14. Catherine Rees and Isamar Conde notched 12 points, both off the bench. Madeline Hatch had 12 points and Tyla Turner 10, and Riann Thayer grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in the contest.

The visitors started quickly, ending the first quarter on a 17-4 run capped by a Shannon jumper with 30 seconds left to go up 20-8. The second saw more HSU dominance, as the visitors managed the first six points of the quarter and outscored the home team by eight to go into halftime with a 43-23 lead.

The Jacks' largest lead of the game came at 3:04 left of the third quarter, as they pushed their advantage to 60-29 on a Rees 3-pointer. The Gators answered with a 12-1 run, but it was a case of too little, too late. After winning the third quarter 21-18, the Jacks outscored their adversaries in the fourth, 12-11 to earn the victory.

HSU won despite taking only three free throws in the game, and were helped by San Francisco's 4-of-10 shooting from the line. The visitors canned 14-of-34 from 3-point range and outrebounded the Gators 37-25. HSU had 23 assists to San Francisco's 11.

The Jacks' regular season came to a close and they will play host to Cal State East Bay Tuesday night in a CCAA Tournament game at 7:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.

"The girls' hard work has paid off and we are thrilled that we put ourselves in a position to play in front of our home crowd in Lumberjack Arena," said Bento-Jackson. "We are anxious to get back home and begin preparing for East Bay."
