Toros Edge Softball Twice Friday

CARSON, Calif. – The Humboldt State softball team opened its four-game road series versus Cal State Dominguez Hills with a pair of Friday losses. The Lumberjacks dropped the opener, 5-0, and saw the Toros rally for a 9-6 win in the nightcap.

The offense was absent in the first game as the Green and Gold were limited to just two hits.

HSU starter Lexee Sheiring surrendered a pair of runs in the first and another in the third. She didn't escape a sloppy fourth frame, which saw a fielding miscue lead to a pair of unearned runs. The freshman tossed 3.1 innings and was responsible for five runs – three of which were earned.

Dominguez Hills got on the board in the first frame of game two against Jacks' starter Sam Sarmiento.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, HSU retook the lead with a pair of runs. Winona Vigil scored on a sacrifice fly and Halle Williams slapped an RBI single up the middle to bring home Illa Haley with two outs.

The Jacks (2-5, 0-2 CCAA) lead was erased in the bottom of the third as Damari Simon evened the game with a run-scoring single and catcher Rachel Sandoval crushed a two-out, two-run bomb ending Sarmiento's afternoon.

Hanna Holland and Vigil helped the North Coast team re-capture the lead with impressive at-bats in the fourth and fifth frames, respectively. Holland lifted a two-run single into centerfield in the fourth inning, and Vigil connected on her team-leading third home run in the top of the fifth.

HSU led 6-4 heading into the bottom half of the fifth and Dominguez Hills took over from there. The Toros finished the game with five runs on seven hits against Jacks' reliever Rachel Bennett. Bennett took the loss, her third of the season, and logged a total of 6.0 innings of relief Friday afternoon.

Micaela Harris, Vigil and Haley each had two hits in the nightcap.

The Jacks conclude the series Saturday afternoon beginning at 11 a.m.
