WBB Advances to CCAA Tournament Title Game, Eliminates Broncos

POMONA, Calif. – Isa Conde scored a season-high 26 points and helped Humboldt State oust the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament host Cal Poly Pomona 69-53 in Friday's semifinal game.

"This is a great win for our program, and I am really proud of the girls," said HSU Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We talked about certain things we needed to do on both ends of the floor to put us in a position to win the game. I thought they executed those things extremely well. We had great balance on offense, we made it a priority tonight to take away the inside options from Pomona and force them to shoot from out. I am really proud of how we competed for 40 minutes."

Conde poured in 17 of her 26 points in the first half and helped the Green and Gold to a 34-29 edge at intermission. Both teams made halftime adjustments, and the Broncos evened the score three times and briefly took the lead in the third. HSU overcame its offensive lull with a 20-4 run, which bridged the third and fourth quarters and gave the Jacks a commanding lead.

"I thought we did a terrific job of sharing the ball," said Bento-Jackson. "We really wanted to stretch out their defense and when you see balance in the scoring it's because we were making the extra pass. We were being aggressive off the dribble and we got things going on the offensive end."

HSU's defense was stifling in the second half limiting Pomona to 22.2 percent shooting. The Jacks took six charges and forced 15 Bronco miscues.

Mikaela Shannon provided a much-needed spark off the bench with 13 points and six boards. Tyla (12) and Tyra Turner (10) joined Shannon with double-digit scoring totals and four Jacks finished with 10 or more points.

"We really did a good job of sharing the ball, driving and penetrating and getting the best shot we can," said sophomore Tyra Turner. "We played smart and we were aware of our fouls. We made smart decisions on offense and defense."

HSU will face top seed UC San Diego Saturday at 7:35 p.m. in the CCAA Championship Tournament title game. The Lumberjacks will advance to their first conference tournament title game since the 2009-10 season.
