ARCATA, Calif. – A strong afternoon from outfielder
Hanna Holland helped the Humboldt State softball team split its Friday twinbill with visiting Sonoma State. The Lumberjacks lost the first game 3-1, but finished the second game in six innings with a 12-4 victory.
Holland provided HSU's offensive spark in both games, but the powder keg exploded in game two. She finished the afternoon with 5-of-7 at the plate with three RBI and a stolen base.
The Seawolves used extra-base hits to take an early lead and clinch the win in the series opener. Jenn Amaral swatted a solo home run in the second and Alee Balanon gave the visitors a 3-0 advantage with a two-run double in the seventh.
Micaela Harris had two hits in game one, including an RBI double in the last frame.
Sonoma State put four runs on the board in the third inning of the next game, but HSU starter Lexee Sheiring settled in and the offense backed her up.
Holland, Rylie Carlier and Amber Orchard provided run-scoring hits in the bottom of the inning to pull the home team within one. The Jacks evened the score with a squeeze bunt in the fourth.
The middle of the Jacks lineup struck again in the sixth with seven runs on six hits. Holland crushed a two-run double to the left-centerfield gap, Orchard launched a three-run homer with two outs and Kelly Sonnemann ended the game with a two-run single.
HSU's 14 hits in the 12-4 win are tied for third-most in a single game this season.
Sheiring picked up win No. 10 and fanned seven in 6.0 innings.
The Green and Gold close the series with the Seawolves Saturday with the first pitch for game one of the doubleheader set for 11 a.m. HSU will recognize its senior class at 10:40 a.m.
