ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State Volleyball team heads on the road for a series of games starting in Rohnert Park, and ending in Turlock, Calif. beginning Thursday, Aug. 23.
Coming off of a tough season, the Lumberjacks are hopeful that their young team will show a strong side during the 2018 season. Heach Coach Kelly Wood refers to the team's previous struggles as the "rebuild season."
"We've got some really good freshmen," said Wood. "I am really happy with the group of new girls we brought in. But it's the returning players that are going to make this season what it is. They are the ones that come back ready to fight, with a chip on their shoulder after a rough season last year."
HSU opens the 2018 campaign Thursday against Pacific Union in Rohnert Park. Next, Notre Dame De Namur will host the Jacks in Belmont, Calif., on Friday. Humboldt State will then travel to Turlock to take on Georgia College in the morning, followed by Academy of Art later that day.
"We've learned to trust each other. I think that at the beginning of practices there was a lot of hesitating, ball dropping or not knowing the set," said junior transfer Emma Flewell. "We have definitely learned how to play next to each other and work as a whole unit. Our offense and serve-receive have improved a lot because we are just trusting each other."
The Lumberjacks return for their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 6 against Cal State Monterey Bay.
