Lumberjacks Split Final Day of NorCal Volleyball Classic

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss against Georgia College, but bounced back with a 3-0 win over Academy of Art on the last day of the NorCal Volleyball Classic.

HSU struggled in the first set of the Georgia College match as it surrendered the first eight points and lost 25-9. The Green and Gold compiled a .302 hitting percentage in the second set and won 26-24. HSU's offense never got going in the third set and committed seven errors, equal to the team's seven kills, in a lopsided 25-11 result. Despite starting behind in the fourth set, Humboldt looked as if they could make a comeback pulling within five, but they could not overcome the deficit and lost 25-18.

Juliana Bertolucci totaled 19 assists, contributing to Emma Flewell's 11 kills versus the Bobcats. Flewell contributed on defense as well as she, Summer Hansen and Hannah Cantrell each had four blocks each.

HSU found its offensive rhythm in its straight sets sweep of Academy of Art. The Jacks stormed out to a 10-4 lead in the first set behind a pair of Urban Knight miscues and a Haley Del Rio kill. The North Coast squad wrapped the opening frame with a flourish as they scored the last seven points en route to a 25-17 victory. Academy of Art held a 14-10 advantage midway through the second set, but HSU wasn't ready to give up. The Lumberjacks scored seven straight points to take the lead and never trailed again on their way to a 25-21 win. HSU hit a match low .087 in the third set, but Academy of Art committed late errors on its way to a 26-24 loss.

Lauren Reid was the leader of the offense in the second match and compiled 13 kills to go with a .323 hitting percentage. Taylor Yancey and Bertolucci combined for 29 assists with 16 and 13, respectively. Cantrell finished the afternoon with four more blocks and Odelia Ryan notched 11 digs.

HSU faces Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, Aug. 31 in the DII West Region Volleyball Showcase hosted by Holy Names University. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
