Men’s Soccer Starts Season with 2-0 Win over Holy Names

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals from Isaiah Dairo to lift it to a season-opening win, 2-0, over Holy Names Thursday at College Creek Field.

"Today was a good result and a great way to start the season," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "The boys played well against a very good Holy Names team who made the game difficult from start to finish. They pressed us from the beginning of the game, worked very hard, and were sharp in possession as well. Our guys stuck to the game plan though and were rewarded for their efforts with two nice goals from Isaiah in the second half. Finding a way to win in a difficult game is a perfect way to start the season. They'll enjoy it for now, and we will regroup tomorrow and prepare for another game on Saturday."

Dairo scored his first goal of the night at 53:48 after squaring up a Marco Silveira cross. The next cross Dairo took at 55:30 from Max Steinmetz resulted in a header and his second goal of the afternoon soaring right above the goalie.

"It was a great game," said Dairo. "I can say all of our hard work paid off, especially for our first home game. I had a team that was definitely behind me and definitely believed in me, and I scored two goals because of it."

It looked as if the Jacks would stretch their lead as captain Francisco Calderon took a hard shot on goal at 69:24 resulting in a line drive rebound off the post. Calderon recovered the bounce and went in again for the second shot only to hit the same post.

Holy Names goalie Rafael Calderon and HSU goalie Bryan Hernandez both finished with eight saves.

The Jacks outshot the Hawks 18-13 and the Green and Gold put 10 on goal.

HSU will take on Dominican University Saturday at 3 p.m.
