Volleyball Sweeps Hawks to Wrap West Region Showcase

| By:
Box Score OAKLAND, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball team wrapped its participation in the DII West Region Showcase with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-7, 25-16) win over host Holy Names University Saturday night.

"I am extremely proud of the team tonight after starting the tournament 0-3," said HSU Head Coach Kelly Wood. "We came out and won the serve and pass, and everything else fell in place.  Our setting was the most consistent it's been this year, we lowered our unforced errors, and they played with great confidence. This is the way we wanted to end preseason and head into the conference opener on Tuesday at Sonoma."

HSU took a 4-1 lead to open the first set, but saw Holy Names rebound to tie the score at 13-13. The Lumberjacks (3-5) scored 12 of the next 15 points to record a 25-16 victory.

The Green and Gold jumped out to a 5-0 advantage and never trailed on its way to a 25-7 win in the second set. HSU hit .455 with 11 kills and just one attack error in the frame.

The third set began with three consecutive kills courtesy of junior Lauren Reid. With the score knotted at 10-all, the Jacks went on an 8-0 run aided by five Hawks attack errors. A Summer Hansen kill and a bad set by Holy Names gave HSU a 25-16 win.

Reid led the Green and Gold with 13 kills and compiled a .478 hitting percentage. Juliana Bertolucci recorded a season-high 37 assists and Odelia Ryan supplied four of the team's 10 service aces.

HSU opens conference play at Sonoma State on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
