Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Concordia 3-0

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's soccer team defeated non-conference opponent Concordia (Ore.) 3-0 Friday at College Creek Field.

"It was great to get back on track with a hard-fought win against a difficult Concordia team today," said HSU Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "We started quick and got a couple of early goals, but they put us under some pressure after that. Our guys defended well, though, and we eventually found the third goal to put the game away. We need to clean up our possession a bit but we will definitely take some confidence away from our finishing today. Hopefully, that is something we can carry forward into conference play."

The first half was close despite Concordia putting up nine shots on goal to HSU's seven. The Jacks got their first goal at 5:35 when Gus Baxter passed a shot from the center to Alejandro Cortes Garcia who headed it over the keeper. Baxter stayed on the radar as a pass from Devin Hauenstein landed in perfect position for him to sink it in from close center at the 23:02 mark.

Down by two goals at intermission, Concordia turned up its offensive intensity in the final 45 minutes. The Cavaliers attempted 10 shots on goal but landed zero in the second half. HSU's seven shots on goal resulted in another point on the board with less than four minutes to play (86:23). A corner kick from Marco Silveira connected with Isaiah Dairo for the final goal of the afternoon, his team-leading third of the season.

Bryan Hernandez secured the Green and Gold goal for all 90 minutes and he totaled nine saves. Dairo, Baxter, and Frankie Calderon each finished with three shots apiece.

HSU improved its record to 2-1. The Jacks will take home field again on Sunday when they face Academy of Art at 2 p.m.
