Women’s Basketball Overcomes Slow Start, Tops Golden Eagles

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's basketball team shook off the rust after 10 days without a game and took care of business in front of its home crowd as the Lumberjacks defeated Cal State Los Angeles 66-41 Thursday night.

Both teams were sluggish to start and went almost three minutes without a basket in the middle of the first quarter en route to a 10-10 tie at the end of the frame. A Tyra Turner layup and Madeline Hatch trey helped the Green and Gold to a 5-0 start in the second quarter. Alexia Thrower sank a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to put the home team ahead 26-23 at intermission.

Gabrielle Carbajal and Hatch led the Jacks with six points apiece in the first half. HSU shot 32.1 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes but connected on 5-of-6 free throws.

"Both teams didn't get into any kind of flow on the offensive end, but I was really pleased with our defense in the first half," said HSU Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "Overall, it was a low-energy, flat basketball game on both ends. I told them at halftime, 'Which team is going to grab the energy and really get some momentum?' Obviously, we wanted to be the ones to do that first."

A flurry of Green and Gold scoring set the tone for a tide-turning third quarter. The North Coast squad opened with a 9-2 run and took a 35-25 edge with 6:26 to go. Isamar Conde drained a pair of 3-pointers in the final two minutes to give the Jacks a 19-12 advantage in the frame.

Leading 45-35 to begin the fourth quarter, HSU's defense baffled the visitors and its offense continued to click. Turner and Conde combined for 17 points in the final 10 minutes and guided the home team to a 25-point victory. The Golden Eagles scored just six points in the fourth quarter and were 3-of-15 shooting (20 percent) down the stretch.

"I think in the second half we started with good energy on the defensive end, and we fed off of that," said Bento-Jackson. "We did a very good job in taking individuals out of their comfort zone. We held their leading scorer to six points, she averages eight free throws per game, and she didn't take one tonight."

Conde led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting and matched her season-high with five 3-point baskets. The senior also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a pair of assists. Alexia Thrower recorded her team-leading seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 boards. Turner also finished with 13 points to go with nine rebounds and four assists.

HSU hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday evening in Lumberjack Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available in advance of the game at HSUJacks.com/tickets.
