Men’s Basketball Falls Short Versus East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's basketball team was unable to overcome its slow start as it fell to Cal State East Bay 88-78 Thursday night inside Pioneers Gym.

East Bay began the game strong scoring the first seven points and securing a 47-38 lead at halftime. HSU's starting five failed to find its rhythm early and was 3-for-14 from the field in the first 20 minutes. It was the Lumberjack reserves who kept the North Coast squad in the game as they accounted for 28 of the team's 38 points.

A physical end to the first half sparked the Green and Gold after intermission. Eight points from sharpshooter Jackson Strong powered the Jacks 12-4 run to open the second half and pulled the visitors within one, 51-50, with 16:50 to play. The Pioneers scored 26 of the next 36 points and never looked back.

The North Coast squad connected on 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) from the charity stripe, leaving 10 points on the line, which ultimately cost the Jacks the game. Jamarlin Jackson came off the bench and contributed productive minutes as he led the Jacks with a season-high 21 points. The junior connected on 3-of-4  attempts from beyond the arc. Jackson Strong also knocked down three treys as he finished with 14, while Jack Kaub led the Green and Gold with six rebounds.

HSU will look to salvage a split on its road trip as it takes on Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Kelp Bed.
