Men’s Basketball Wins Road Meeting with Otters

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Humboldt State men's basketball team fended off a late run by Cal State Monterey Bay and held on for a 68-61 victory Saturday afternoon in the Kelp Bed.

The Lumberjacks scored the game's first points thanks to a Jack Kaub layup and they never trailed for the remainder of the game. The North Coast squad was lethal from beyond the 3-point line as it converted 6-of-11 attempts in the first half. Jamarlin Jackson and Jackson Strong each had two first-half treys. HSU's defense held the Otters to a 22.6 shooting percentage as the visitors carried a 38-26 lead into the locker room.

Monterey Bay improved its offensive efficiency in the second half and used an 11-3 run beginning at the 16:06 mark to pull within six points. The Otters cut the lead to two, 57-55, with a Jared Williams 3-pointer with 4:38 to play. HSU closed out the game at the free-throw line as both teams found themselves in foul trouble down the stretch. The Jacks connected on 9-of-12 attempts from the charity stripe in the second half to clinch a road win.

Jamarlin Jackson earned the start tonight for the Green and Gold and did not disappoint. The junior point guard finished with a game-high 18 points while also grabbing three boards and dishing out three assists. Kaub continued to work hard down low as he led the Jacks with 10 rebounds and also added seven points.

Saturday's result moves the Jacks to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. HSU returns home Thursday, Jan. 24 for a game against Cal State San Marcos with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside Lumberjack Arena.
