Women’s Basketball Tops Otters, Wins Fourth Straight

SEASIDE, Calif. – Entering Saturday's game in the Kelp Bed, the Lumberjacks knew the Otters weren't a team to overlook – so they didn't. Humboldt State women's basketball completed its season sweep and secured its fourth straight win as it defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 64-56.

The North Coast team dealt the Otters a 30-point decision in the last meeting and showed its maturity and toughness on the road Saturday. HSU improved to 10-5 overall and 8-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Monterey Bay trailed 6-0 to start the game and was outscored by the Green and Gold 21-11 in the first quarter. Jovanah Arrington scored a team-high nine points for the Jacks in the first 10 minutes and sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the visitors a 10-point advantage.

A pair of first-quarter fouls for Tyra Turner limited the Green and Gold offense in the second, but HSU maintained a nine-point lead heading into the locker room. Monterey Bay outscored HSU 12-11 in the second frame and trailed 32-23 at its conclusion. Arrington and Gabrielle Carbajal finished the first half with nine points apiece.

HSU kept the home team from gaining momentum in the third quarter despite a 6-1 burst to end the period. Leading 46-37 to open the fourth, the Jacks shot 50 percent from the field and limited the Otters to 33.3 percent shooting in the last 10 minutes to put the game away. Isamar Conde scored eight of her team-leading 15 in the fourth quarter.

"It wasn't our best offensive night, but we stayed the course and did enough to pull out the win," said HSU Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We did a good job of attacking the basket in the second half and knocked down free throws"

Alexia Thrower led HSU rebounders with nine boards and scored 12 points. Arrington joined the Jacks' double-digit scorers with 11 points to go with six rebounds. The Green and Gold outrebounded Monterey Bay 34-30 and went 26-for-28 (92.9 percent) at the free-throw line.

"I'm proud of the team for picking up these two road wins," said Bento-Jackson. "We are now facing teams for the second round of conference, and we know that every game is going to be a battle."

The Jacks will put their four-game winning streak on the line Thursday in Lumberjack Arena as they look to avenge their early-season road loss to Cal State San Marcos. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
