Men’s Basketball Faces Home Challengers in Cougars, Tritons

| By:
ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State men's basketball will put its 9-0 home record on the line as it hosts Cal State San Marcos Thursday and No. 13 UC San Diego Saturday. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m.

"Our guys take great pride in defending our home court and saying we are undefeated there late in January," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "This team's identity is to protect their house. We have a tradition of our loyal fans and winning at home. I suspect we'll have a big crowd this weekend with students on campus."

The Lumberjacks have won 10 of their last 12 games and split last week's road trip. Entering this week's homestand, HSU ranks third in the conference standings behind top-ranked UC San Diego and Cal State East Bay with an 8-4 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

"It seems to be the formula to split on the road and win them all at home," said Kinder. "A split on the road certainly isn't our goal, a sweep is our goal. It was a tough game at Monterey Bay as it had just beaten Chico State on Thursday."

HSU dealt San Marcos an 11-point home loss in their late November meeting. The Cougars have lost 12 of their last 13 games and are 1-6 on the road this season. Junior Khalil Fuller has been the team's leading scorer and rebounder averaging 14.3 points and 8.4 boards per game. Fuller scored 19 points and was 6-for-6 shooting from the field in the Cougars' 86-75 loss to the Green and Gold.

"They are a dangerous team," said Kinder. "They are well-coached and balanced. San Marcos isn't very deep, and we will try and take advantage of that."

The nationally-ranked Tritons are 10-1 in CCAA action. UC San Diego dominated the last meeting with the North Coast team, an 85-62 result in its favor, shooting 57.1 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from 3-point range. Junior center Chris Hansen averages 16.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game in conference play, but he was limited to five points and six boards against HSU. The Tritons have won three consecutive games and defeated San Marcos 92-69 at home last weekend.

HSU students, faculty and staff get in free to home basketball games by showing campus ID. Federal government employees will also receive two complimentary general admission tickets by showing their government ID at the gate on game day.
