Women’s Basketball Looks to Extend Winning Streak at Home

| By:
ARCATA, Calif. – Four games and counting. The Humboldt State women's basketball team looks to extend its winning streak this week with home games Thursday and Saturday in Lumberjack Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

This week's homestand will be anything but a cakewalk for the Green and Gold as they will be hosting Cal State San Marcos, who defeated them by two points earlier this season, Thursday and the conference leader No. 4 UC San Diego Saturday.

HSU won both of its road games last week with victories over Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay. Isamar Conde led the Jacks with 23 points versus the Pioneers in a complete team win that saw four Green and Gold players score in double figures. HSU avoided a trap as it escaped The Kelp Bed with a 64-56 win over a winless Monterey Bay squad.

"Every game in conference is going to be a battle, and you have to bring your 'A-game' every night, especially on the road," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson.

The Jacks will need to be at their best hosting two teams that dealt them a loss earlier this season. San Marcos has won three of its last four games and lost a 68-67 double-overtime game to UC San Diego on Saturday. The Cougars are a high-scoring team that averages 69.5 points per game against conference foes, a statistic that ranks them third in the California Collegiate Athletic Associaton. Jon'Nae Vermillion, the Cougars leading scorer and rebounder, had 12 points and 14 boards before fouling out against the Tritons in Saturday's loss.

UC San Diego is 15-0 overall and 11-0 versus CCAA opponents entering Thursday's road game at Chico State. The Tritons are led by Mikayla Williams, a transfer from Cal State Fullerton, who has been arguably the best player on a talented team. Williams averages 20.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. UC San Diego has outmatched opponents for much of the season and has played in only three games settled by less than five points, two of which were against San Marcos.

HSU students, faculty and staff get in free to home basketball games by showing campus ID. Federal government employees will also receive two complimentary general admission tickets by showing their government ID at the gate on game day.
