ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's basketball team prepares to cement itself as one of the California Collegiate Athletic Association's top squads as it hosts Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills this weekend.

The Lumberjacks begin the homestand with the Golden Eagles on Thursday, followed by a game versus Dominguez Hills on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.

HSU took a quick break from conference action last week as it topped Portland Bible College 97-39. Newcomer Jamarlin Jackson had an outstanding home debut scoring 20 points in 20 minutes. Seventeen Lumberjacks saw action in the lopsided home victory.

"Our guys have worked extremely hard, and they are playing well together, especially on the defensive end," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "All the hard work we have been putting in is starting to pay off for the team and everyone is excited right now."

The Green and Gold are 7-0 when taking the home court, and they continue to give the North Coast fans something to cheer about as they lead all California Collegiate Athletic Association teams in scoring with 84.9 points per game.

"We are proud of our unblemished home record at Lumberjack Arena which has a lot to do with the fans," said Kinder. "You look at years past, and when we are undefeated or have one or two losses at home it's a good recipe for a championship. We have to travel and traveling is not easy to do out of Humboldt. To be on the road and to play in places like LA and the Bay Area, that's no easy task. Typically if you split on the road and win them all at home you're going to be right there competing for a championship."

Riding high, following its victory against UC San Diego, LA was unable to secure a sweep on the weekend as it fell to San Francisco State 79-88 last Saturday. The Golden Eagles are off to a 9-5 start to begin the season and are 5-3 in CCAA play. Junior guard Shacquille Dawkins leads the offensive charge for LA as he averages 12.4 points per game, while junior forward Ja'Sean Lewis is the fourth-best rebounder in the conference, hauling in 7.6 boards per game.

"LA is an excellent team, they are very good and extremely deep," said Kinder. "They use a platoon system similar to what we did early this year where you substitute five in and five out. They go deep on the bench, and they try to wear you out with their full-court press. It's going to be an up-tempo type of basketball. Hopefully, we can limit our turnovers and stick to our fundamentals as much as we can. They will get out and deny lanes, they are going to be very physical, and they are extremely athletic, so I'm expecting an exciting game for our fans."

Dominguez Hills (7-5, 5-2 CCAA) saw its five-game winning streak come to an abrupt end as the Toros were defeated 52-82 last Saturday by UC San Diego. The Toros boast a well-balanced offense that is good for third-highest scoring offense in the CCAA with 77.8 points per contest. Dominguez Hills has five players that average at least 9.5 points or more, and sophomore sharpshooter Colten Kresl has the CCAA's second-best, long-range shooting percentage as he has connected on 49.1 percent of 3-pointers attempted.

Tickets for both games are still available and fans can purchase them in advance at HSUJacks.com/tickets. HSU students, faculty and staff receive free admission with campus ID.
