HSU Travels Down to Southern California This Week For a Pair of CCAA Matches

ARCATA, Calif.---  Humboldt State's men's soccer team will look to carry the momentum over from Sunday's 3-0 win over Stanislaus State to the Lumberjacks' two matches in Southern California this week.  The Lumberjacks will face UC San Diego this Friday, October 11 at 4:30pm in La Jolla. They will then travel to San Marcos for a 2pm match with Cal State San Marcos this Sunday, October 13.
 
LUMBERJACKS' LAST TWO MATCHES:  HSU went 1-1 this past weekend in its two matches at College Creek Field.  The Lumberjacks started the weekend with a 2-1 heartbreaking loss to Chico State, who was receiving votes nationally, on Friday afternoon.  HSU took an early 1-0 lead on Gus Baxter's penalty kick goal in the fifth minute.  Chico State scored two unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes including the game-winner with 21 seconds left.  Robert Quintero had six saves in goal for the 'Jacks.  HSU bounced back with a 3-0 win over Stanislaus State on Sunday afternoon as Quintero and the Lumberjack defense recording their second shutout of the season.  Quintero recorded five saves in goal for the 'Jacks.  Scoring for the Lumberjacks were Isaiah Dairo, Nicolas Falco and Devin HauensteinMotoki Sato and Martin Calderon each recorded assists for the victors.
 
UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS:  Entering its Friday match at La Jolla, Humboldt State is 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the CCAA.  HSU is averaging 3.00 goals a game while giving up 1.75 goals a game.  Robert Quintero has posted a 1.75 goals against average with 41 saves to go with his 41 saves.  He also has two shutouts this season.  Isaiah Dairo has a team leading six goals to go with his one assist for a team high 13 points.  Gus Baxter is right behind Dairo with four goals with Devin Hauenstein and Israel Gonzalez each scoring three goals.  Marco Silveira leads the team with his five assists.  Five different players have recorded game-winning goals for the Lumberjacks in Dairo, Baxter, Gonzalez, Hauenstein and Silveira.
 
TRITONS IN REVIEW:  UC San Diego enters its match with the Lumberjacks with a 7-3 overall record and a 2-2 CCAA record.  The Tritons went 0-2 last weekend losing 2-0 to Cal Poly Pomona and 2-0 to then No. 18 Cal State San Bernardino.  Brett Jones leads UCSD with his five goals and ten points.  Nick Cirrito has scored three goals to go with his one assist for seven points.  Jonathan Sabouri and Cooper Lachenbruch each have recorded two assists.  Pedro Encisco has posted a 0.69 goals against average with a .741 saves percentage, 20 saves and five shutouts this season in goal for the Tritons.
 
UC San Diego leads the all-time series with HSU 6-0-6.  The Tritons won last year 3-1 in La Jolla on Sept. 23, 2018.  The two teams played to a 2-2 double overtime draw in 2015 in Arcata.
 
COUGARS IN REVIEW: Cal State San Marcos enters its Thursday match with San Francisco State with a 3-5-2 overall record and a 1-1-2 CCAA record.  The Cougars lost 1-0 in double overtime to No. 18 Cal State San Bernardino and tied 1-1 with Cal Poly Pomona this past weekend at home. 
 
John Williamson leads the way with his four goals and two assists.  Juan Camilo Salazar and Jacob Johnston each have scored two goals while Marco Rafael has recorded three assists.  Justin Tesar has seen action in goal in eight matches.  He has posted a 1.77 goals against average with 28 saves.
 
The all-time series between the two teams is tied at 2-2.  HSU defeated Cal State San Marcos last year in San Marcos 1-0 as Gus Baxter scored off a ball from Max Steinmetz.  The 'Jacks also defeated the Cougars in 2017, 2-1 in Arcata.
 
UP NEXT:  After Sunday's matches at Cal State San Marcos, Humboldt State will return home to College Creek Field on Friday, October 18 for a 3pm match with Cal State East Bay.
