SEASIDE, Calif..--- For the second straight match, Humboldt State lost in five sets this time to Cal State Monterey Bay (15-25, 27-25, 25-14, 14-25, 14-16) to finish its season.
Lexi Riggs and
Summer Hansen each paced the Lumberjacks with 13 kills while
Lenox Loving recorded 12. Loving added 14 digs and
Odelia Ryan also had 14 and
Juliana Bertolucci recorded 24 assists.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "Tonight was another heartbreaking finish to a season where we just could not seem to finish teams off," said head coach
Kelly Wood. "We pushed it to five-sets and had match points that we were unable to capitalize upon. I'm just disappointed for my team, especially the seniors who have put in so much hard work. I really wanted them to finish their season with a victory."
FIRST SET: HSU took a 5-3 lead in the first set after a
Carla Crespo service ace. The Otters scored eight of the next nine points to take a 11-6 lead. They increased their lead to 18-8 on a kill by Baylie Pierson. The Lumberjacks cut the deficit to 24-15 on a kill b
Malia Coyle, but Cal State. Monterey Bay finished the set off on a kill by Jenna Tobin to take the first set 25-15.
SECOND SET: The first set went back and forth until CSUMB took a 11-6 lead. HSU cut the Otter lead to 17-16, but the hosts took the next two points to increase their lead to 19-16. The visitors took five of the next nine points to take a 24-20 on a kill by
Lexi Riggs. The hosts tied the match at 24-24 on a block by Samantha Brennan, but the Lumberjacks took three of the final four points to take the set 27-25 capped by a combined block by
Lenox Loving and
Emma Flewell and even the match at 1-1.
THIRD SET: Humboldt State took an 8-2 lead in the third set. An
Odelia Ryan service ace gave HSU a 11-4 lead, but the Otters cut HSU's lead to 15-9. HSU took a 2-1 lead in the match after taking 14 of the final 24 points taking the set 25-14 lead by
Malia Coyle's kill.
FOURTH SET: A kill by Baylie Pierson gave CSUMB a 5-2 lead in the fourth set. A kill by
Emma Flewell keyed HSU's cutting the 'Jack deficit to 8-7. The Otters came right back and took a 15-8 lead. HSU didn't go away as the guests cut the deficit to 23-12, but the hosts took two of the final four points led by a kill by Kaylie Honberger to even the match at 2-2.
FIFTH SET: The final set went back and forth until a kill by
Lenox Loving gave HSU a 9-7 lead. HSU increased its lead to 13-9 on a kill by
Summer Hansen. It looked like HSU was going to take the match when a kill by Hansen gave the 'Jacks a 14-11 lead. Cal State Monterey Bay took the final five points including the final two points on back to back service aces by Malia Tuatagloa.
