ARCATA, Calif..--- Sonoma State outscored Humboldt State 46-28 in the second half to key their 86-73 road win over the Lumberjacks in both team's CCAA opener. The Lumberjacks lost despite having four players in double digits in scoring in
Rob Lewis' 23 points,
Isaiah Pope's 17,
Amari Green's 12 and
Zachariah Christian's 11. HSU will host Cal State LA this Saturday at 7:30pm in another conference game at Lumberjack Arena.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "We need to be ready to compete from tip-off," said head coach
Steve Kinder. "Our ability to sustain good possessions defensively and offensive need to get better to compete in the CCAA. I will challenge our team to prepare at a higher level on a day to day basis. Sonoma State played well tonight, they earned a CCAA road win which very difficult to do."
FIRST HALF: Sonoma State jumped out to a 10-0 lead to begin the game. An old-fashioned three-point play by Pope cut the Seawolf lead to 14-13 eight minutes into the first half. The Lumberjacks took a 15-14 lead on a
Leland Green lay-up. A three by
Amari Green off a pass from
Leland Green increased the 'Jack lead to 23-21 mid-way through the half. A three by Christian off a pass from
Amari Green capped a 10-6 run by the hosts as they took a 33-26 lead. Sonoma State cut HSU's lead to 35-34 on a three by Jacob Williams at the 5:01 mark of the first half. Humboldt State (3-2, 0-1 CCAA) went on a 10-3 run to take a 45-37 lead on a three by Lewis. A three by Michael Smith cut HSU's lead to 45-40 heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: A three by Christian off a pass from
Jackson Strong gave HSU a 48-40 lead on the Lumberjacks' first possession of the new half. Sonoma State (2-3, 1-0 CCAA) went on a 12-2 run to take a 52-50 lead at the 17:22 mark of the second half. The Seawolves increased their lead to 57-53 on a jumper by Isaac Davidson. A three by Pope off a pass from Christian cut the Seawolves' lead to 57-56 at the 14:28 mark, but Sonoma State increased its lead to 68-58 on a three by Jacob Williams. A three by Strong off a pass from
Amari Green cut SSU's lead to single digits (68-61), but once again SSU increased its lead to 72-61. The Seawolves increased their lead to 76-63 with just 3:01 to go in the game. Two made free throws by Pope made it 76-67 with just 1:50 on the lock. Sonoma State finished the game outscoring its hosts 10-6 to take the 86-73 victory.
BALANCED SCORING ATTACK: HSU had four players in double digits led by
Rob Lewis' 23 points while
Isaiah Pope had 17 points and
Amari Green chipped in 12 points.
Zachariah Christian chipped in 11 points for HSU.
TURNOVERS: HSU forced 17 turnovers by Sonoma State and had 23 points off those turnovers by the Lumberjacks. The 'Jacks had eight steals including three by
Jackson Strong .
DISHING OUT THE BALL: Humboldt State had 13 turnovers and just nine turnovers this evening.
Jackson Strong had four while
Leland Green and
Amari Green each had three.
Rob Lewis added three and
Zachariah Christian added one for HSU.
SEASON HIGH: Freshman
Isaiah Pope had a season high 17 points this evening for HSU. He went five-for-nine from the field including connecting on four of his five attempts from beyond the arc. He also went three-for-three from the line while recording two steals.
UP NEXT: HSU will continue its home stand on Saturday, November 23 when the 'Jacks host Cal State L.A. on Military Appreciation Night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm. The Golden Eagles lost 79-49 to Cal State East Bay this evening in Hayward.
