ARCATA, Calif..--- Humboldt State's women's basketball will finish off its four-game home stand this Friday-Saturday, November 29-30 hosting the Thanksgiving Classic at Lumberjack Arena. The Lumberjacks will face two teams from the PacWest Conference in Dominican (Calif.) and Notre Dame de Namur. Cal State East Bay will be the fourth team in the classic. Game times are 5pm (Dominican vs. Cal State East Bay) and 7pm (Humboldt State vs. Notre Dame de Namur) for Friday. Then Saturday's game times are 3pm (Notre Dame de Namur vs. Cal State East Bay) and 7pm (Humboldt State vs. Dominican).
RECAP OF THE WEEKEND: Humboldt State went 2-0 this past weekend in its CCAA openers of the 2019-20 season. The Lumberjacks started the weekend with a 64-58 win over Sonoma State this past Thursday behind
Alexia Thrower's season high 33 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Gabrielle Carbajal chipped in 13 points for the 'Jacks who forced 19 turnovers by the Seawolves including 10 by steals (three each by
Tyra Turner and
Alexia Thrower). They finished the weekend with a 72-70 win over Cal State L.A. on Saturday. Four players scored in double digits led by Thrower's 23 points and Turner's 14 points.
Sandin Kidder added 11 points and Carbajal chipped in 10 points for the victors. Thrower grabbed a season high 15 rebounds and Turner dished out 10 assists with no turnovers for the 'Jacks.
UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS: Humboldt State improved to 4-1 on the season including 2-0 in the CCAA this past weekend with wins over Sonoma State and Cal State L.A. The Lumberjacks are one five teams that are undefeated in CCAA play. Cal State San Marcos is 3-0 while the 'Jacks, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State East Bay and Stanislaus State are all 2-1. They are averaging 69.2 points per game while giving up 62.8 points per game. HSU is being out-rebounded 36.8 to 31.2 rebounds per game.
LUMBERJACK LEADERS: Four players are averaging double digits in scoring for the 'Jacks with
Alexia Thrower's 23 points per game average leading the way.
Molly Dixon is second on the team at 11.2 followed by
Gabrielle Carbajal and
Sandin Kidder each at 10.4 points per game. Thrower leads HSU with her 9.6 rebounding average, 11 steals, 81.8% shooting from the line and 52.4% shooting from the field. Dixon is shooting a team leading 42.3% from three-point range. Turner has dished out a team high 16 assists with just two turnovers in the three games she has played in this season.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Two Lumberjacks recorded double-doubles in HSU's win over Cal State L.A. on Saturday in
Alexia Thrower and
Tyra Turner. Thrower had 23 points and grabbed a season high 15 rebounds, one from tying her career high of 16 rebounds which she accomplished on Feb. 28, 2019 against Sonoma State. Turner scored a season high 14 points and dished out a season high 10 assists against the Golden Eagles. Her 10 assists were two away from her career high of 12. In the 40 minutes she played on Saturday, Turner had no turnovers with a steal and had four rebounds.
22-8: Humboldt State is 22-8 at home since 2017-18 including 12-5 since the beginning of the 2018-19 season. The Lumberjacks are 3-1 this season with their only blemish a 76-73 loss to Western Washington earlier this month in the West Region Crossover Classic.
NOTRE DAME de NAMUR: The Argonauts are 2-2 after going 2-0 in their last two games in Turlock, Nov. 15-16. NDNU defeated Cal State East Bay 60-59 and Stanislaus State 71-67 in Turlock. The Argonauts opened the season losing 49-47 to Chico State and 58-47 to Sonoma State in their own tournament Nov. 9-10. They are averaging 56.3 points per game while giving up 58.3 points per game. NDNU is out-rebounding its opponents 32.3 to 27.8 rebounds per game. Cheyenne Jankulovski leads NDNU with her 10.3 scoring and 7.0 rebounding average along with her 12 assists. Bobbie Purify is averaging 10.0 points per game and shooting a team high 70% from the field and 60% from three's. Sharon Rolden has recorded a team high seven steals in NDNU's first four games of the season. The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series with NDNU 3-0 including winning 76-73 in Arcata in 2017.
DOMINICAN: The Penguins are 3-1 after defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 73-68 in Seaside on Nov. 17. Dominican opened the season with a 69-60 loss to Sonoma State on Nov. 9 and then defeated Chico State 87-69 on Nov. 10. The Penguins other win was an 88-71 victory over San Francisco State. They are averaging 77.0 points per game while giving up 69.3 points per game. Dominican is out-rebounding its opponents 43.8 to 37.3. Jerusha Paine leads the way with her 26.5 scoring and 11.5 rebounding average. She is also shooting a team high 58% from the field. Also averaging double digits in scoring for the Penguins are Marisa Mondave (14.3 ppg), Julia Razo (12.3 ppg) and Brittney Cedeno (10.0 ppg). Mondave leads the way for Dominican with her 43.8% shooting from three's and 84.2% shooting from the line. Cedeno has dished out a team high 16 assists and recorded a team leading nine steals. HSU leads the all-time series with the Penguins 5-2, but Dominican has won the last two including 81-70 in Hayward in 2016.
CAL STATE EAST BAY: The Pioneers enter the classic with a 4-2 overall record after going 2-0 this past weekend in the CCAA with an 88-65 win over Cal State L.A. and a 63-62 victory at Chico State. They are averaging 68 points per game while giving up 56.5 points per game. Cal State East Bay is also out-rebounding its opponents 35 to 28.2. Morgan Greene and Regina Sankey each leads the Pioneers with their 8.7 scoring average followed by Madison Schiller at 8.0 points per game. Greene is averaging a team leading 6.0 rebounds per game. Sankey is tied for the team lead in steals with Madison Schiller each with 12 while Schiller has a team leading 21 assists.
UP NEXT FOR HSU: After the classic, Humboldt State will return to CCAA action as the Lumberjacks go on the road for a pair of games. The 'Jacks will be at Cal Poly Pomona on Dec. 5 at 5:30pm and at Cal State Monterey Bay on Dec. 7 at 1pm. They will return home on Dec. 12 for a 5:30pm scheduled CCAA contest against SF State in Lumberjack Arena.
