Story Links

ARCATA, Calif..---  Humboldt State improved to 5-2 this evening with a 92-61 victory over the visiting Portland Bible College Wildcats.  Five players scored in double digits for the Lumberjacks paced by Jackson Strong with 13 points.  Isaiah Pope scored 12 points off the bench for Humboldt State while Leland Green and Rob Lewis each added 11 points and Isaiah Sampson chipped in 10 points.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH:  "Our substitution rotation allowed us to have everyone scored on the roster tonight," said head coach Steve Kinder.  "Five guys in double figures.  We emphasized assist basketball, interior play and communication on defense.  This non-conference game gave us a much needed break from CCAA play during Thanksgiving break as many of our players have been hit with the flu bug.  Due to Ray Sean Scott Jr. (medical red-shirt) status, we have shifted gears both offensively and defensively with our schemes.  Our guys have done a nice job picking up the slack with his absence and we are moving forward in a positive direction.  Portland showed team character in the second half doing a nice job competing at a higher level.  We will focus on Monday and Tuesday and travel to Southern  California on Wednesday for a Thursday night game against a very good Cal Poly Pomona team."

FIRST HALF:  A jumper by Isaiah Sampson capped a 9-0 beginning of the game run by Humboldt State (5-2).  A lay-up by Ahmad Kempster cut HSU's lead to 16-9 seven minutes into the first half.  A three by Ruben Parks Jr. off a pass from Noah Viera increased the hosts' lead to 26-11 mid-way through the first half.  A three by Jackson Strong off a pass from Bryce Jackson gave HSU a 36-15 lead with just six minutes left in the half.  A lay-up by Leland Green off a pass from Sampson gave HSU a 44-22 lead, but a jumper by Aaron Deatherage cut the hosts' lead to 44-24 heading into the half.

SECOND HALF:  A Leland Green lay-up off a pass from Zachariah Christian increased the 'Jack lead to 53-28 just four minutes into the second half.  A lay-up by Christian off a pass from Rob Lewis gave HSU a 55-28 lead as HSU cruised to a 92-61 non-conference win.
