POMONA, Calif..--- Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (6-2, 2-1 CCAA) shot 58% from the field including 47% from three-point range to key their 96-64 CCAA victory over the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks this evening in Pomona, Calif. William Christmas paced the Broncos with a game high 24 points. Leading the way for the Lumberjacks was
Jackson Strong with 21 points while
Leland Green chips in 18 points.
FIRST HALF: Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to an early 11-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game capped by back to back lay-ups by William Christmas and BJ Standley. Back to back three's by
Jackson Strong and
Leland Green capped a 9-0 run by the Lumberjacks as they tied the game at 9-9 at the 12-minute mark of the first half. Cal Poly Pomona came right back with a 13-2 run of its own keyed by a lay-up by Phoenix Shackleford to take a 22-11 lead. An old-fashioned three-point play by
Amari Green cut the Bronco lead to single digits (22-14) with 7:54 left in the first half. Humboldt State kept its run going as the 'Jacks cut its deficit to 26-21 on a jumper by
Gabrys Sadaunykas with just 5:35 left in the half. Cal Poly Pomona finished the half on a 17-4 run to take a 43-25 heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: A made lay-up by
Arash Poorsina early in the second half cut the hosts' lead to 45-27. A three by Mason Dickerson capped a 21-10 run by the Broncos ads they took a 66-37 lead eight minutes into the second half. Back to back three's by
Jackson Strong cut CPP's lead to 72-52 with 8:52 left in the game, but that's the closest HSU would get as Cal Poly Pomona took the 96-64 CCAA victory.
STRONG FROM THREE'S: Jackson Strong went six for seven from three-point land this evening for a team high 21 points. He also went three-for-three from the charity stripe. For the season, Strong has connected on 48% of his attempts from three-point range going 31-for-64. He has scored in double digits in all but one game this season and tied his season high this evening with his 21 points. Strong is averaging 14.1 points game this season.
GREEN: Leland Green has scored in double digits in all but one game this season for the Lumberjacks. He is averaging 15.4 points per game for HSU in its first eight games of the season. The senior transfer has connected on 45.6% of his attempts from the field this season.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State (5-3, 1-2 CCAA) will travel to Seaside, Calif., this Saturday, December 7 for a 3pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State Monterey Bay. The Otters lost 73-69 to Stanislaus State this evening in Seaside.
