Humboldt State Off To Best Start Since 2014-15

ARCATA, Calif..---  The Humboldt State Lumberjacks improved to 6-1 after a 63-47 victory over the Dominican University Penguins.  This is the Lumberjacks best start since 2014-15, when they started 9-1.  Alexia Thrower recorded her third straight double-double with 14 points and a career high 18 rebounds.  Madeline Hatch chipped in 12 points off the bench while Gabrielle Carbajal added 11 points.
 
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "Tonight was a a night that I can honestly go home saying our team completely carried out the defensive game plan from start to finish," said head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson.  "I know I get on their nerves because I expect them to carry out every detail in the scouting report and today they did exactly that.  In order to be a successful basketball team, we will have to continue to execute defensive from here on out.  We took a step forward this weekend in certain areas and I will be challenging them to build on the momentum from this weekend."
 
FIRST QUARTER: Dominican (3-3) jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first three and a half minutes of the game.  Humboldt State followed that with a 7-0 run capped by a Madeline Hatch three off an assist from Tyra Turner.   A three by Molly Dixon off a pass from Gabrielle Carbajal increased HSU's lead to 14-10 with three minutes left in the quarter.  Another trey by Dixon gave HSU a 23-15 lead into the second quarter.
 
SECOND QUARTER:  The Penguins cut the Lumberjack lead to 24-19 in the first minute of the new quarter.  Humboldt State went on an 11-0 run capped by a Carbajal lay-up off a steal by Dixon to take a 35-19 lead.  Two free throws by Brittney Cedeno cut HSU's lead to 35-23, but a jumper by Tyra Turner gave HSU a 37-23 lead heading into the half.
 
THIRD QUARTER:  The hosts took a 47-27 lead on a three by Hatch in the first six minutes of the third quarter.  A jumper by Carbajal increased the hosts' lead to 49-27.   A lay-up by Jerusha Paine cut the Lumberjacks' lead to 51-32.  A free throw by Dixon gave the 'Jacks a 51-32 lead heading into the final quarter. 
 
FOURTH QUARTER:  Back to back jumpers by Carbajal and Emily Packham gave HSU a 55-34 early in the final quarter.  The 'Jacks increased their lead to 59-37 on a jumper by Raven Herrington off a pass from Alexia Thrower.  Dominican cut the Lumberjack lead to 61-47 with 2:21 left in the game.  A jumper by Hatch sealed the 63-47 win for Humboldt State.
 
THIRD DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Alexia Thrower recorded her third straight double-double with 14 points and a career high 18 rebounds.  She went six-for-19 from the field while connecting on a trey and going one for-two from the line.
 
SHE'S BACK:  In her second game of the season, Madeline Hatch scored 12 points off the bench while recording a steal in 21 minutes.
 
CARAJAL:  Gabrielle Carbajal scored 11 points while dishing out three assists and recording two steals in HSU's win.
 
 UP NEXT:  HSU will be on the road for a pair of CCAA games.  The Lumberjacks will be at Cal Poly Pomona on Dec. 5 at 5:30pm and at Cal State Monterey Bay at 1pm on Dec. 7.
