ARCATA, Calif--- Humboldt State Lumberjacks improved to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA with a 71-59 victory over the SF State Gators this evening at Lumberjack Arena.
Alexia Thrower paced the Lumberjacks with her fourth double-double with 24 points and 10 rebound.
Tyra Turner recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 assists.
Madeline Hatch tied her season high with 14 points while
Molly Dixon chipped in 10 points.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "We were engaged, we played with intensity, and stayed focused throughout the game," said head coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. "Tyra (Turner) did a tremendous job of really setting the tone for us especially to begin the third quarter. Tomorrow is a travel day and we need to prepare for a very tough Cal State East Bay team."
FIRST QUARTER: SF State (0-8, 0-5 CCAA) jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first three minutes of the game. A lay-up by
Molly Dixon off an assist from
Sandin Kidder capped a 9-4 run by the Lumberjacks as they took a 14-13 lead. Humboldt State increased its lead to 18-15 on lay-up by
Alexia Thrower with 90 seconds left in the quarter. SF State finished the quarter tying the game at 18-18 on a three by Ashley Hart.
SECOND QUARTER: The Lumberjacks outscored the Gators 10-5 in the first five minutes of the second quarter to take a 28-23 on a three by
Madeline Hatch off a pass from
Tyra Turner. A jumper by Muirae Gomez cut the Lumberjack lead to 30-29 with 2:09 left in the half, but HSU finished the half scoring the final four points capped by two made free throws by Turner to take a 35-29 lead heading into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER: A
Tyra Turner lay-up capped an 8-0 run by the 'Jacks as they took a 43-29 lead just two minutes into the third quarter. They increased their lead to 46-30 on a three by
Madeline Hatch off of one of Turner's 10 assists. A jumper by Madison Corder cut the 'Jack lead to 46-33, but HSU scored the next five points (three on a three-point play by
Alexia Thrower and a lay-up by Turner). A three by
Sandin Kidder increased HSU's lead to 50-36 with 3:41 left in the third quarter. SF State cut the deficit to 56-41 with 1:43 on the clock, but once again HSU scored the final four points of the quarter capped by a jumper by
Emily Packham as Humboldt State took a 60-41 lead into the final ten minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER: The Gators started the fourth quarter on a 6-2 run cutting the hosts' lead to 62-47. A lay-up by
Alexia Thrower increased the Lumberjack lead back to 19 (66-47) with 5:59 to go in the game. A
Tyra Turner's jumper gave HSU a 69-49 lead with just 2:40 on the clock. The Gators finished the game on a 10-2 run, but it was a little too late as the 'Jacks took the 71-59 CCAA home victory.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE'S: Both
Tyra Turner and
Alexia Thrower each recorded double-doubles this evening. Thrower scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. She also recorded three steals and dished out two assists for HSU. Turner just missed a triple-double. She scored 12 points and dished out 10 assists while grabbing eight rebounds. She also had three steals for the 'Jacks.
SEASON HIGH: Madeline Hatch tied her season high with 14 points this evening. She went four-for-eight from three's while grabbing two rebounds.
TURNOVERS: Humboldt State scored 24 points off of SF State's 20 turnovers. Of those 20 turnovers, eight were by steals including three each by
Tyra Turner and
Alexia Thrower while
Molly Dixon had two.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will be on the road this Saturday, December 14 in Hayward for a 1pm CCAA contest at Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers lost 62-59 to Cal State San Bernardino this evening in Hayward.
