SEASIDE, Calif..--- Cal State Monterey Bay rallied from a seven-point deficit mid-way through the second half to defeat the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks 76-71.
Rob Lewis paced the Lumberjacks with 19 points while
Leland Green added 17 points.
Zachariah Christian added 10 points off the bench for the visitors.
FIRST HALF: A JR Schilling jumper gave the hosts a 10-6 lead in the first three minutes of the game. A jumper by
Rob Lewis capped a 7-3 run by the Lumberjacks as they tied the game at 13-13.
Gabrys Sadaunykas' lay-up tied the game at 22-22 for the 'Jacks at the 10:51 mark of the first half. Cal State Monterey Bay took a 26-22 lead on a lay-up by Andre Ferguson. Humboldt State (5-4, 1-3 CCAA) tied the game at 30-30 on an
Isaiah Sampson lay-up with 4:14 left in the first stanza. An old-fashioned three-point play by
Leland Green gave HSU a 33-30 lead. A three by
Jackson Strong increased the Lumberjack lead to 38-31 with just 2:34 on the clock in the half. Back to back lay-ups by
Zachariah Christian increased the 'Jack lead to 43-33 late in the half. A lay-up by Schilling cut the HSU lead to 45-35 heading into the second half.
SECOND HALF: Cal State Monterey Bay (4-6, 1-3 CCAA) scored the first four points of the second half to cut HSU's lead to 45-39. A jumper by
Jackson Strong increased HSU's lead to 47-39 on its next possession. A three by Charlie Tooley capped a 9-2 run by the Otters as they cut the 'Jack lead to 49-48. A jumper by
Rob Lewis stopped the Otter rally as he gave HSU a 51-48 lead with 12:11 on the clock. A
Leland Green jumper capped a 6-0 run by the Lumberjacks as the guests took a 57-51 lead mid-way through the half. Cal State Monterey Bay would not go away as the Otters' Tommy Kramer hit a three with 8:27 to go in the game to cut HSU's lead to 60-57. A lay-up by
Zachariah Christian increased the Lumberjack lad to 64-59 with 6:09 on the clock. CSUMB cut the HSU lead to 65-63, but
Jackson Strong went one-for-two from the line and gave HSU a 66-63 with just four minutes to go in the game. A made free throw by Dwight Murray capped a 6-0 run by the hosts as they took a 69-66 lead. Lewis' made free throw cut CSUMB's lead to 69-67 with 60 ticks on the clock. A three by Charlie Tooley increased the hosts' lead to 72-67, but a Lewis jumper cut HSU's deficit to 72-69. Cal State Monterey Bay scored four of the game's final six points to take the 76-71 victory.
CHRISTIAN OFF THE BENCH: Zachariah Christian had 10 points off the bench for the Lumberjacks in 17 minutes. He went five-for-eight from the field and grabbed three rebounds.
LEWIS LEADIN' THE WAY: Rob Lewis had 19 points to lead the way for HSU. He went seven-for-15 from the field while dishing out one assist and grabbing seven rebounds.
Leland Green added 17 points for the 'Jacks.
12 TURNOVERS: Humboldt State lost even though the 'Jacks forced 12 turnovers including seven by steals.
Leland Green and
Jackson Strong each had three steals and
Gabrys Sadaunykas added one.
