SEASIDE, Calif..--- Humboldt State had their six-game winning streak snapped in a 62-55 road loss to Cal State Monterey Bay this afternoon in Seaside, Calif. The Lumberjacks (7-2, 3-1 CCAA) tried to rally back from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but saw their rally fall short in the seven-point loss.
Madeline Hatch and
Alexia Thrower each had 14 points to lead the way for HSU while
Tyra Turner chipped in 13 points for the Lumberjacks.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "I am extremely disappointed in our defensive execution today," said head coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. "I thought I had us ready but I obviously didn't. Cal State Monterey Bay were the aggressors all day. We took a big step backwards today."
FIRST QUARTER: Cal State Monterey Bay jumped out to an 8-2 lead mid-way through the first quarter. A three by
Madeline Hatch off an assist from Tyra Tuner capped a 5-1 run by the Lumberjacks as they cut their deficit to 9-7 with 3:33 left in the quarter. The Otters increased their lead to 13-7 on a jumper by Serena Toney. The guests cut the CSUMB lead to 15-13 on a three by
Molly Dixon off another assist from Turner heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: The Otters started the second quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 21-13 lead capped by a lay-up by Camille Parker. Two made free throws by
Alexia Thrower cut the Otter lead to 23-17 with 5:33 left in the half, but the hosts outscored HSU 10-5 in the final five minutes to take a 33-22 lead into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER: Cal State Monterey Bay (1-5, 1-3 CCAA) increased its lead to 40-24 three minutes into the new quarter. A jumper by
Madeline Hatch cut the Lumberjack deficit to 40-28 at the 6:30 mark of the third quarter, but the Otters took a 49-31 lead on a jumper by Serena Toney. CSUMB took a 55-36 lead on a jumper by Sylvia Vartazarian heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: Humboldt State started the final ten minutes on a 13-3 run to cut its deficit to 59-49 capped by a
Tyra Turner lay-up with 4:36 left in the game. A made jumper by Lizzy Benton increased the Otters' lead to 60-49, but a three by
Madeline Hatch and a made free throw by
Alexia Thrower cut the HSU deficit to 60-53. The Lumberjacks had a chance to cut into CSUMB lead but they missed their jumper and Katie Fitzgerald's two made free throws sealed the win for the Otters. A made lay-up by
Molly Dixon made the final 62-55.
SEASON HIGH: Madeline Hatch had a season high 14 points as she tied with
Alexia Thrower for the team lead in scoring. She also connected on a season high four three's.
TURNER MOVING ON UP: Tyra Turner scored 13 points and dished out seven assists while grabbing nine rebounds for the 'Jacks. She now has 421 assists and 931 points.
FOURTH QUARTER: Humboldt State outscored the Otters 19-7 in the fourth quarter. For the season, HSU has outscored its opponents 163-143 in the fourth quarter.
