ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's basketball team returns home to the North Coast for a pair of games as they host Cal Poly Pomona Thursday followed by Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m. inside Lumberjack Arena.
The Lumberjacks, winners of seven out of their last eight games, defeated Stanislaus State 65-58 last Thursday. The result improves HSU's overall record to 13-6 with an 11-5 conference mark which is good enough for the third best in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Junior forward Alexia Thrower finished with her 12th double-double of the season after recording 20 points and 11 rebounds versus Stanislaus State. Thrower is the conference's third highest scorer averaging 16.6 points per game while her 10.3 rebounds per game are good for the sixth best average. Senior forward and team captain Isa Conde is also a dynamic scorer as her 15.9 points per game are good for fourth in the conference right behind Thrower. Defensive toughness has been a staple of this Lumberjack squad and junior point guard Tyra Turner is averaging 2.6 steals per game, the second best in the CCAA. Turner also ranks second nationally with a 3.32-1 assist to turnover ratio.
Pomona finished last week with a split result, first dropping a match against a nationally-ranked UC San Diego team before defeating Cal State San Marcos 64-60 Saturday night. The Broncos are 19-3 and 15-2 during league play as they sit at No. 2 in the CCAA standings, just in front of the Green and Gold. Senior guard Jordyn Shane leads her team in scoring with 14.6 points per game while junior forward Rebecca Islas will crash the boards as the team's best rebounder, averaging 7.9 per contest.
"We know the quality that this Pomona team possesses," said HSU Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "This game could play a big part for us. We are disappointed in the loss when we faced in Pomona earlier this season, and I think the girls are going to be thinking of that. We just want to go out with high energy and great effort and give them our best performance."
San Bernardino will look to snap its two-game losing streak after suffering losses to Cal State San Marcos and UC San Diego this past week. The Coyotes own a 9-13 overall record and sit at 8-10 in the conference. The Coyotes will rely on senior guard Jasmine Sauser and her 17.1 points per game, which makes her the second highest scorer in the conference.
Thursday will be HSU Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night as well as Pink Night. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to Thursday's doubleheader and join the Lumberjacks in supporting the battle against cancer. Saturday will be the annual Black Out Night promotion and both teams will sport their black jerseys. Fans are invited to support the teams by wearing black.
