Broncos Too Much for HSU Men's Basketball

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's basketball team fell behind early and never recovered as Cal Poly Pomona dealt the home team an 82-65 loss Thursday night.

The Lumberjacks saw their losing streak extend to three straight and now sit at 15-10 overall and 9-8 in conference play.

Jamarlin Jackson scored the game's first basket and the Broncos reeled off 11 straight points to answer. Pomona saw its lead balloon to 21 points, 27-6, just under the eight-minute media timeout as their patient offense picked apart the HSU defense. The Jacks trailed 37-20 at the half after connecting on just 28.6 percent of their field goals and 2-of-12 attempts from outside the arc.

"We did a poor job of guarding and defending, and they did a nice job of making shots," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "Credit them, especially Riley Schaefer down the stretch, for hitting huge shots. He played big in the second half, and I think he was a difference in us making a late run. Our guys showed heart and never gave up, and I am proud of that. At the same time, we have to start our games better."

Both teams quickly got into foul trouble in the second half, which gave the Green and Gold an opportunity to battle back while stopping the clock. The Broncos' lead hovered near 20 points for much of the final 20 minutes of action, but the Jacks went on an 8-0 run powered by 3-pointers from Kameron Curl and Victor Mijas to make it a 10-point game, 66-56, with 5:30 to play. Pomona answered and stayed in front by 10 or more points for the remainder of the contest.

Calvin Young II led HSU scores with 10 points and he also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Curl and Trevon Bentley each chipped in eight points.

"After the game, we addressed the Lumberjack Arena crowd," said Kinder.  "Our fans made sacrifices coming out tonight in a storm and on Valentine's evening. Instead of going out to a nice restaurant they came to watch us play and perform. We need to do the same and make sure we get good rest, eat correctly and be ready for practice tomorrow."

HSU hosts Cal State San Bernardino Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
